Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 42 runs
Match report
It is very rare that the Grade 2 cup final gets played at Mannofield and Fraserburgh brought through a sizeable and enthusiastic support to enjoy the afternoon. With the effects of the earlier rain drying up, ASI Gordonians invited the Broch to open and instantly regretted it as a single from Lawrence gave Gospel the strike and he deposited Dalgarno for a big 6, which he followed with a 4, and 14 on the board off the first over. Perera doesn't concede many runs, but the score moved to 25 off 2 overs as the openers scampered through for runs at will. Maheshwari was a surprise to bowl the 3rd over and he reduced the run rate to only 8 off his over. Over number 4 and Perera bowled Gospel for an 11 ball 20. Jamil calmed things down by only going for a single off the 5th over, and then Maheshwari kept his cool in his 3rd over to pick up a shot from Lawrence and ping it back to the keeper to remove the batsman for 24. The Bowie boys ran very well between the stumps to keep up the scoring momentum but the return of Dalgarno saw Liam Bowie snick behind for 13, and next over his brother was stranded and easily run out for an excellent 29. 96 for 4 in the 12th over, and with the big 4 now spectators, the Gordonians bowling, apart from a wayward over from Dolman, strangled the scoring rate, and the Fraserburgh innings petered out to 131 for 7 off 20 overs.
Abrar and Mohit opened, and the former smacked the first ball from Lawrance for 4, but with the strike rotated, the Gordonians run chase suffered a big blow as Mohit was caught behind without troubling the scorers. 3 balls in to the 2nd over from Rennie, and Abrar got a thick outside edge up in the air to point, and O'Neill gleefully accepted the chance to make Gordonians 6 for 2. Dalgarno and Perera looked to do a repair job, but as they struggled to score runs, the match had a 'game over' feel to it. Rennie had Dalgarno lbw for 9 in his 5th over and after 10 overs Gordonians were 37 for 3. Perera launched Gospel for a huge 6 which left a dent in a car outside the ground, but when Amith walked across his stumps to try to find a gap on the leg side, he missed and was bowled by the slow bowling of O'Neill for 7.
Tom Whitaker hit a glorious boundary, but when Perera was superbly caught and bowled by Gospel, the writing was on the wall for Gordonians, and it was left to Jamil and Dolman to bat out the remaining overs as the total crept to 89 for 9.
On the day, Fraserburgh seemed to have an extra pair of hands in the field, and their top order batting had given them a target for their bowlers to defend. They bowled accurately, and didn't allow the big hitters of Gordonians to make an impression. Jamil was the pick of the bowlers in the match with 4 overs for only 8 runs, and Naman can be very proud of only conceding 27 off his 4 overs when the Broch batting charge was in full swing, but the trophy deservedly headed northwards, much to the delight of the ACA committee who will be expecting a big turnout from Fraserburgh at the Grades Dinner!
