Siyapa v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Another scorcher of a day for cricket and this time the venue was what used to be true Aberdeen's Home of Cricke - Duthie Park. At one stage this ground used to hold 4 games every weekend and plenty of midweek cricket! Those good old glorious days are a distant memory and what's left behind is not so noteworthy. Recent spell of warm weather meant the usual lush green outfield of Duthie Park has turned into brown paddy field after the cropping season is over! The pitch looked dry and hard with plenty of spots and patches that promised excitement! It lived up to that expectation when Siyaapa skipper Naveed won the toss and put Gordonians in for batting and the second ball of the innings took off from good length to chest of Indy! Did we see some puff of dust coming out?! However, it woke both batsman up and they dug in. Outfield was lighting fast and anything that pierced the infield had no chance of stopping. Although the pitch continued to misbehave, both openers MK and Indy scored at a brisk rate with MK doing bulk of the scoring. The opening partnership lasted for 19 overs and worth 119 runs, where Mk scored a brilliant 68 under very tough conditions. Next man Devlin started off cautiously avoiding chin music where he could until the drinks break at 22nd over. As it happens in many occasion, the lapse in concentration after a break brings about a wicket and that's exactly what happened with Indy who fell in 23rd over for a well fought 48. Two further quick wickets fell in next couple of overs and score read 141 for 4 after 26. Gordos ship was tumbling and it needed a steady captain and second officer. Jamil and Tom absorbed the roles perfectly and batted sensibly for a 13 over period which produced valuable 50+ runs. When Tom got out at 38th over with score at 187, another mini collapse ensued which saw another 3 wickets falling in almost as many overs! Jamil ensured the Gordos tail wag sensibly for the remainder of the innings until he fell on 44th over for a superb 40! Gordos inning folded with 1 ball to spare at 221.
Gordos skipper Indy knew it was a competitive score at this ground and on a pitch which misbehaved consistently. Behind the wicket glove work was taken up by ex regular keeper Devlin for this game which meant another bowling option in the name of Indy was added to the attack. Siyaapa started their innings in an uncharacteristically cautious way. Opening bowling spell of Jamil saw him bowling 4 maidens in a trot, clearly indicated a tactic by Siyaapa to play off the master bowler. Introduction of Scott and 2nd change bowler Indy also barely gave away anything. Their persistent bowling brought back to back wickets and Siyaapa were 40 for 2 after 13 overs. The next pair of Siddiqui and Yaqub batted brilliantly for next 22 overs. They dispatched anything loose on offer and with 1 fielder short for Gordonians, they manipulated the field very well too. They took the score to 174 when Indy brought himself back into the attack and immediately picked up Siddiqui's wicket by catching him with own bowling. 48 required off 10 overs with 7 wickets in hand. Another burst from Scott saw 2 wickets fell on 40th over with still 17 required to win. But with the combination of lightning fast outfield, 1 fielder short, big hitting batsmen of Siyaapa and 'some' questionable umpiring decisions at crucial stages, it was always going to be difficult to come out on top. There was no heroic ending for Gordos on this occasion but there was plenty of heart shown during the game by many! Siyaapa overhauled the target on 43rd over and won the game with 3 wickets in hand. Difficult to say which way the game would have finished if only neutral umpires were appointed, but that's the beauty of 'If Only'!
