Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI v Cults on Sat 11 May 2019 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 86 runs

Match report On a bright and sunny yet cold day at Counteswells, most of Gordonians 2nd XI arrived on time , just to learn that the game will have a delayed start due to ongoing matches of school. At toss, it was mutually agreed by two skippers that the game will be reduced to 40 overs per side with 9 overs maximum per bowler. Gordos skipper Indy won the toss and decided to bat first on a belter of a track! New opening pair of Indy and Chamila strolled out in the middle to commence the proceedings. However, Gordos didn't have the start they were hoping for as Chamila was bowled for a golden duck at the start of the 2nd over! Score read 6 for 1 and Taj joined Indy in the middle. Both played sensibly and ran well between the wickets to build a small partnership of 25 runs. Indy was middling the ball well but missed a late inswinger from Atif and was bowled for 18. Jamil came in at his usual no.4 spot and did his usual thing to steady the wobbling ship. Taj and Jamil negotiated with the Cults bowlers well and kept the scoreboard ticking over till 17th over when Taj was caught behind down the leg side in an unfortunate fashion. He played a fine innings of 43 and perhaps missed out on a big score! Amith was next man in and looked to be in good touch, but a wrong call from him meant he was run out for 5. Score was 89 for 4 after 20 overs and Gordos looked a bit nervy! Next man Kamal Rana joined hands with Jamil in the middle to rebuild the innings but Jamil could accompany him till 28th over when he was caught behind by Mayank with score 112! Half of the Gordos were back in the hut and there was still 12 overs to play. Rana took control of the situation and next man Rajneesh supported him excellently. During this 30+ run partnership, Kamal did most of the scoring while Rajnessh played a suporting role. However, Rajneesh, who is usually is in the driver's seat, made his presence felt when he launched a huge SIX over the bowlers head, the only maximum of the game! At this stage Cults introduced their secret weapon Talwinder 'Virk' Singh who is a seasoned campaigner for Gordos SPCU outfit! Introduction of Virk brought results almost immediately as Rajnessh and Kamal both holed out in his 2nd over! Score ticked along to 157 at the loss of 7 wickets. Gordos only managed to add further 7 runs for the last 3 wickets and bundled out for 164 at 38th over! A below par score at Counteswells Grass wicket which played very well, with a good outfield!

Tea break was mutually agreed to be shortened to make up for the late start and also due to the fact majority of the Cults players were fasting for Ramadan. Cults sent out their explosive middle order bat Abid to give them a quick start and perhaps finish off the game quickly. Cults innings started off in a similar fashion when they lost their first wicket of R Watson in the 2nd over! Toggarati came in at no.3 and supported Abid to play his au-naturale game of swish-swoosh, which he did and had some success! But the opening bowling pair of Jamil and Chamila were too experienced to let things off the hook and the scoreboard never really rallied. Introduction of Staurt 'The Coach' Dalgarno brought a rot to the cults batting line up and they started falling like flies. Stuart's mixed up his deliveries so expertly that he would put a mixologist to shame! He bagged his maiden 5 wicket haul in the process and ran through the middle order of Cults! Only resistance was put up by F Khan who scored a fighting 14 before top edging a full toss! Amar, who bowled at tandem with Stuart, picked up a solitary wicket of Virk. Cults managed to muster up only 78 in their chase and was all out in 22 overs. To everyone's surprise, the game was finished before 7 pm, which had the potential to go on well past 8:30!

Gordonians came back to winning ways after a thumping loss against AGSFP last week and looked much more a settled side with new players getting to know each other. In terms of performances, Taj and Kamal both batted very well for their 43 and 36 respectively which helped Gordos put on a defendable total on board. However, Stuart's bowling performance stood out from the rest and his 5 wicket haul speaks its volume, hence the MoM goes to Stuart, well done mate! Go on have a beer or two ;)

Gordos face Ellon at Gordon park tomorrow for the first round clash of Aberdeenshire Cup.
