Huntly v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report It was a bit of a scorcher as Gordonians arrived at Huntly looking to protect their early season spot at the top of the table. Whilst Donny is trying to keep grass on the pitch at Countesswells to speed it up, the Huntly pitch was as bald as the Gordonians secretary. It looked a 'proper' cricket pitch but the Gordos openers were soon tested as Newlands and Petrie, perhaps the oldest opening bowling partnership in the league, showed all their experience as they had the ball seaming all over the place. Early runs came but they were hard earned and a controlled edge from Hegde rattled to the boundary in the 2nd over from Petrie. Arora looked in ominous form as he took three 2s in over 3 from Newlands but then things started to go wrong. Adi has had a few lbws of late, all different, and Newlands added another to that list as Adi was out for 10. Aman was another lbw victim in over number 9, a wicket maiden from Newlands, which surprisingly precipitated bowling changes at both ends with Gordos 35 for 2. Huntly captain Jack Mitchell knows what he is doing but unfortunately for him the promising Innes Parkin struggled with the moving ball and Saraswat launched a full toss over the fence as Parkin went for 29 off 2 overs and Gordos to 73 for 2 off only 13 overs. This prompted the introduction of spin at both ends with Jordan Squire starting well and getting considerable spin, but it was the woeful full toss which induced a miss hit from Abrar that was well caught by Rigby, Abrar gone for 12. The next over from Squire brought more success as a snorter jumped up at Himanshu and ballooned to slip and it was 76 for 4 on the scoreboard. More woe for Gordos as Bhandari was lbw to Mitchell for 6 but thankfully Saravanan and Wig dug in and saw off Mitchell, but the last over from Squire went pear shaped as Pranav sent a full toss skyward in to the leg side, caught for 19, and 2 balls later a juicy half volley was hit with precision to long on by Wig, another to go for 19. 120 for 7 was well below par but Shravan hit a couple of lusty shots as he made it to double figures before being bowled and Aatish played a couple of nice shots as Gordos stumbled to 142 all out in the 39th over. Whilst Squire took 4 for 26 it wasn't his best balls that took the wickets.
Saraswat started with a maiden and Srinivasan 3 maidens as the play and miss became the stock ball. Callum Whyte has been in the runs for Huntly but he was bowled by Himanshu for 8. Jack Mitchell is the big wicket and the celebrations were as big as he feathered Srinivasan behind for only 7, credit to Mitchell for tucking his bat under his arm and walking. Huntly had ground out 31 for 2 off 15 overs and opener Stewart faced 47 balls before also nicking Srinivasan to Bhandari for 5. On paper, Gordos just had to worry about Squire and he looked solid from ball one. Summers stuck in for 19 balls, his eventual duck courtesy of a sharp catch by Wig, and Arora was on a hat trick as rearranged the stumps of Lentz, Huntly 38 for 5. Squire safely negotiated the hat trick and started finding the middle of the bat on a very regular basis. Parkin contributed 2 to a partnership of 35 before Wig bowled him and then Newlands started to give Gordos some stress as he played a couple of sumptuous shots. He added 30 with Squire before Pranav bowled him for 14. Every successful team needs someone who can clean up a tail and the variations of Ashfaq tempted Petrie to drive to the safe hands of Srinivasan, followed in his next over by Mitchell who blootered one to Abrar at short cover who managed a slight juggle before reducing Huntly to 108 for 9. Squire had gone to 50 and decided to accelerate, hitting 2 glorious shots off Pranav and then a single to leave Rigby 2 to face. He looked worryingly competent as he played out the over. 22 to win and all bets were on with Squire batting so well and it was a surprise when he took a single off the first ball of the next over from Ashfaq. This was either a display of confidence in Rigby or an accident waiting to happen, and it was the latter as Ashfaq bamboozled Rigby next ball and bowled him. Huntly all out for 122 with more than 8 overs to go. Squire made a fantastic unbeaten 65 but Gordos will be grateful that he didn't look to control the strike.
