Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI v Bon Accord on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 44 runs

Match report Gordonians hosted the penultimate league game against the league leaders at Counteswells Artificial which saw nearly 400 runs scored in last 2 games! Gordos with home advantage and a powerful batting line up of Bon Accord meant another run fest was on the cards. Gordonians won the toss and put Bons in to bat first under the overcast conditions! The overcast condition became showers only after 1 over and player ran for shelters. Dangerous Fazal Awan fell soon after the rain delay off wily Jamil's bowling! Gordonians thought they had a good start and with Akhlaq, Nawaz and Shakeel missing, the opportunity was there for them to grab with both hands, instead they decided to spill/fumble/miss it completely! Next two Bons batters R Haider and P Gopinathan negotiated the early moving ball well and ran well between wickets, siting the sluggish nature of outfield and Gordos fielders combined! Gordos bowlers bowled well in small phases, particularly Debo Barman, but they were let down by sluggish ground fielding of fielders. Bons batters accumulated runs well and had a massive partnership between them of 150+ runs! First architect of that partnership, Prashant fell for a well made 73 with score reading 172! His partner Rehan fell soon after for 80 in the 36th over, trapped LBW by Mohit. Gordos had a sniff of turning the game around but couldn't take advantage of 2 new batsman in the crease. Runs were accumulated quickly in the last few overs and it could have been quicker if Mohit didn't control it to some extent from one end. He bagged 3 wickets in the game and had something to show for his efforts. Bons set a massive total of 242!

After a nice tea, Gordos went out with an intent to chase down the total. They opened with Debo and Mohit and it's the former that provided the flying start! However, Fazal found a good rhythm and sent both openers back in the hut by disturbing their timbers in back to back overs. He repeated the same in his following over and sent back no.3 Rajneesh for 9. When Fazal was bowling brilliantly from one end at a rapid pace, other opening bowler Ash Bashir was leaking runs and didn't look like taking a wicket, but with Eid finished not so long ago, Gordos batters were still in the mood for sacrifice! Next batsman Kamal Rana was run out without troubling the scorers and 4 top orders batsman were packing up within first 8 overs! Indy joined Jamil in the middle and they found themselves in a similar territory and some sort of normal services resumed! Fazal tried his best to unsettle this pair by bowling quick and sharp bouncers but that didn't crack the code and frustration grew among the Bons camp! 'Encouragements' became louder, 'comments' became more penetrative but Indy and Jamil kept calm and carried on. What fast and furious didn't manage to do, the slow and steady did - Malik's off-spin disguised slow medium paced outswinger which doesn't swing, was missed by Jamil and hit him plumb in the front and it became 90 for 5! Next man Amith is known for his big hitting capability but he also got outfoxed by one of Malik's vicious offies which didn't turn and got him stumped! Score 94 for 6 and Gordos were staring at a big defeat. Next man, or should say boy, Shaunak have shown a lot of promise in his age group of U-14 and has already had a taste of Grade 1! He batted very sensibly and provided good support to Indy who slowly started to open up to keep up with the req RR. However, he was out for 49 in 31st over with score reading 121! Gordos were only halfway through with only 13 overs left! But next man Chamila is known to be most dangerous when cornered and he unleashed a 'whirlwind' to Bons bowling attack which saw them getting tonked around all over the park in this next phase! Score quickly reached 184 in 38th over when Chamila mistimed and he was safely pouched at covers for a brilliant 44! The last two batsmen Mathi and Jay both are capable of scoring quickly too but no miracle was on the cards today! Young Shaunak remained not out for a well made 24 and Gordos finished on 198 in 41.1 overs.

Although Gordos secured 16 points from this game and comprehensively secured themselves out of the relegation zone, it somewhat left a lot to desire for because this game was there for Gordos' taking but perhaps the difference was the 30 odd extra runs they leaked due to poor fielding. Next week Gordos have final league game against Cults who enjoyed a few freebies lately and also the showdown of Aberdeenshire Cup final against Inverurie on Sunday!
