Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI v Mannofield on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 43 runs

Match report On a gloomy, wet and rain forecasted day when water sports with wet suit on seemed more appropriate than cricket, the local derby between Gordonians CC and Mannofield CC commenced at a scheduled start time of 1 pm. Counteswells artificial pitch was allocated for this clash as the main pitch was protected for visiting international team’s practice the following day! Mannofield skipper Indika won the toss and inserted Gordos to bat first. Gordos opened with destructive pair of AB and MK! As expected, they provided a good and entertaining start to Gordos innings. The opening partnership cruised past 50 runs mark and was eyeing for a ton but MK ran himself out after a well made 23. Next man Indy came in to join AB and together they formed another good partnership and batted together for 10 overs. AB got to his 50 and fell soon after when he nicked one down the leg side, to which he walked! A testimony to the way Gordos aspire to play and uphold cricket in Aberdeen and shire area, regardless of the perception they have in the Shire cricketing community. Mayank was the next man in and provided a solid support to Indy and together they steadily accumulate runs in the middle overs. Indy and Mayank batted sensibly together for as many as 14 overs together which laid a good platform to go after Mannofield bowling attack in the last third of the innings! However, Phil Wood of Mannofield had other ideas. He went wicketless in his opening spell but he changed it around during his second spell! He bowled brilliantly and ran through the Gordos middle order which included 2 set batsmen Indy (46) and Mayank (27)! A well deserved 5-for was eventually bagged and that also included 2 golden ducks! This mayhem could have ended Gordos innings well within 170 odd runs if it wasn’t for the Gordos’ glorious ‘Tail’ which consisted club legends like Debo Barman! Kamal and Debo essentially applied breaks on the Gordos slide and rebuilt the innings masterfully. Debo’s legendary cut shots reached new heights and this time landed out of the boundary line twice for maximums before he got out trying it for third time for a well made 18! Next man Jai Bhalani has been batting exceptionally well lately and he resumed his normal services coming at no.10! He scored freely and steered the last man Tarun very well to ensure Gordos bat their full 45 overs! Jai stayed not out on 22 and Gordos set a decent total of 222!

After tea, Mannofield opened their innings with usual opening pair of Indika and Chandu. Gordos knew these two were vital wickets for them and an early breakthrough is important. Chamila did exactly that when he bowled Chandu in his first over! Next man Perera didn’t last long either when Jai Bhalani pouched a sharp catch at slips off Jamil’s bowling. Ken joined his dad in the middle and provided brilliant support. Ken played sensibly and patiently while Indika did bulk of the scoring. Indika’s entertaining innings consisted of some lusty blows but one shot too many meant he was caught out off Mayank’s bowling. Ken continued to anchor at one end and next batsman Phil took charge of the scoring. He hit three maximums in same of over of AB and accelerated the scoring rate, in fact went ahead of the asking rate for a brief moment. The game was hanging in balance, perhaps marginally tilted towards Mannofield at this stage, however Mayank’s present beefed up purple patch of form swung the momentum right back towards Gordos way when he cartwheeled Phil’s off stump with a peach of inswinger! From this point on, Mannofield were chasing the game and tried to keep up with the asking rate. The last real threat was posed by Boyapati in the latter stage of the game when he batted aggressively alongside Ken and scored a quickfire 16. Experienced Jamil’s return spell saw him outfoxing these two batsmen in consecutive overs. Chamila finished off things by trapping Supan lbw in the last ball of 40th over with scoreboard reading 179.

Gordos completed a home and away double against Mannofield and secured another 30 crucial points which essentially secures them a spot outside relegation zone. Next week Gordos host league leaders Bons at home in the penultimate game of the league and they will be hoping for a similar outcomes against other league toppers during their home fixtures.
