Mannofield v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI on Sat 25 May 2019 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report The two 'Not so significant' teams, according to some local tabloid, of the two most significant clubs in the Aberdeenshire region - Gordonians 2nd XI and Mannofield 3rd XI met at city ground of Harlaw for a Grade 1 clash. Gordonian skipper won the toss and asked Mannofield to bat first under an overcast gloomy condition. Wise decision perhaps considering the weather condition but rather silly when there was no sight of 5 Gordos players at 12:55. However, the scare was over in next couple of minutes and a full 11 was on the field, fully warmed up with the help of freshly made tea!

Mannofield opener Hastie started off positively and got their innings off to a flyer! Although his attempt to play too many big shots too soon did him when he was clean bowled by Chamila in the 6th over! Other opener Alawattage Jr. was playing the role of an anchor and did a commendable job by holding at one end. Next batsman Khalid showed some good technique against the swing of Chamila and pace of Scotty! However, Chamila outfoxed him by varying his length and trapping him right in front of stumps. Next man G Perera played our own C Perera very well but couldn't stop a crushing yorker from Scotty which made a mess of the stumps! Next bat Srinivasan also had a brief stay when he failed to connect a straight delivery from Kiran. With four top-order batsman back in the hut Gordonians had the situation under control, but incomes Alawattage Sr. to join his son in the middle and changed the scene. He dispatched anything short of length with authority to the boundary. Gordos bowler did serve up some juicy stuff in the middle part of the innings and also there was lack of control which contributed heavily towards the Mannofield total. The father and son duo was ticking the scoreboard quite nicely until the batting pair thought they could take on ageing arm of Mathi, but they didn't know it's no ordinary arm but an exotic alloy of most precious elements! An accurate throw from the deep saw Jr Alawattage falling short and his vigil finally came to an end after 23 overs, run out for 8! Mathi also picked up the wicket of the Sr Alawattage when he was caught brilliantly by Kiran at mid-off. Next man Tonge had a brief stay for 4 but the following pair of L Saraswat and ex-Gordos player Lewis Cameron had a good partnership which frustrated the Gordos bowlers but they stuck at it. Lewis played a handy inning of 20 which was supported by L Saraswat by an overly unconventional 11! When they got out, the last pair of were younger members of Saraswat clan and they saw through 45 over quite bravely and both added 3 against their names too! Mannofield put up a good score of 147. An off day for Gordos bowlers except for Chamila who bagged 2 wickets for only 9 runs, meant there are room for improvement.

After tea, usual opening pair of Indy and Mk went out to start the proceedings. Mk took 13 of Lewis Cameron's opening over which meant he never bowled again in the game! Hastie and Srinivasan were essentially became the opening bowling duo of Mannofield and Mk took them on right from the word go! He scored freely and found boundaries quite regularly. Indy on the other hand played a supporting role by rotating the strike regularly. The score raced to 80 odd only after 10 overs and it looked like Indy and Mk still didn't fully recover from the IPL fever! Mk fell on the 11th over for a quickfire 40! Light drizzle started by this time and Gordos realised they need to finish off the game quickly in order to secure the vital points. Next man in Taj was the ideal man for the job and soon he showed why. Indy put his foot down and took charge of the scoring as he was the set batsman. He scored 20 runs off the last over of Hastie which included 2 maximums over the mid wicket boundary! In the process he reached his half century but the job was not done. Taj scored freely and ran well between the wickets to keep the run rate above 8 rpo! He launched the biggest six of the day in the following over and by that time the end line was well and truly withing reach. Gordos took 2 more overs to overhaul the target in just 15.4 overs with Taj and Indy remaining unbeaten at 20 and 66 respectively! Although the rain was never too heavy to call off the game but credit must be given to Mannofield players who continued to play under the tough conditions.

Next week Gordos sees a stern challenge of Inverurie at Kellands Park and they have to bring their A Game if they want to see a positive results from that game.
