Match report A final big game of the season and another road trip, this time to Freuchie, to meet Glenrothes for a place in the National League. Arrowdawn Gordonians turned up early to find Glenrothes already warming up, although they hadn't had quite so far to travel! Swapnil won the toss and elected to bat on a surprisingly hard pitch. Dyson and Arora were sent in to face Glenrothes Pro Akbar, who had picked up 50 wickets in their undefeated run to the ESCA Championship. Crichton at the other end had also been accruing wickets on a regular basis so with 50 overs available, a steady start was required. This was duly achieved, with Akbar beating the bat occasionally, but also being creamed off his legs by Arora for 4, illustrating how quick the outfield was. Another delicious shot ran off to the boundary pursued by Glenrothes captain Robbie Wright, who managed to slide in to the wall as he tried to prevent the 4 runs. He slowly got to his feet, and with his ankle looking somewhat delicate, it was questionable as to how effective his bowling could be. With 25 on the board, it was breakthrough time. Wilkinson had dropped a flashing shot at wide slip earlier, but he made no mistake as Dyson creamed a wide one from Crichton straight to him at slip, an exceptional take given how quickly the ball was travelling. Akbar was taken off after 4 overs, and it was Wright who replaced him bowling left arm over. Showing no signs of his earlier injury, he swung one back in through the gate of Swapnil, who had followed up his ton at Dundee with 2 ducks in a row. The collapse continued as Wright had Arora lbw for 18, immediately followed by a peach of an inswinging yorker that bowled Sunny first ball. Stark survived the hat trick ball with minimal fuss and began rebuilding with Hamish. A couple of sweetly timed flicks off the legs for 4 and it looked like this could be the day for Stark to show his quality. Having put on 23 and taken the score to 56 it was all about to go pear shaped. Hudson pitched one up to Stark who miscued his drive and was easily pouched by Culley for 12. Mayank then fell to Reddy, another mistimed shot, this time straight to Wright for a duck, immediately followed by Debo clean bowled first up, leaving Reddy on a hat trick for his next over. Hamish then whacked Hudson in to the school for a towering maximum, but once the ball had been retrieved, he was promptly lbw for 14, Forbes falling in the same manner the very next ball, leaving both bowlers on hat tricks. Neither managed to complete the feat, but Kristof was rather tamely caught off Hudson for 1, and the collapse was complete. 56 for 4 had become 63 all out in the 23rd over. Hudson had collected 4 for 6, Reddy 2 for 14, and Wright 3 for 12, with Akbar the only bowler wicketless. Glenrothes got the pads on as the kettle hadn't even been filled, no matter boiled, and Greaves drove the first ball from Forbes imperiously to the boundary. Another boundary followed and it was easy to see how Greaves had managed to score over 1000 runs for the season. With Cam holidaying in Amsterdam, Swapnil opened at the other end and only conceded a single. Forbes then had Culley smartly caught down leg by Dyson in the next over, but this was to be the only success for the Gordonian bowlers as run machine Greaves rattled his way to an unbeaten 45 off 51 deliveries playing some quality shots, much to the delight of the Glenrothes supporters. Gosse did edge one past Adam who had no chance as he was standing up, but he looked relatively untroubled as he made 16, the match ending tamely as Kristof bowled a wide, the game all over in the 14th over. Gordonians had gone in to the match as underdogs, and justified that tag as Glenrothes steamrollered them in all aspects of the game. The only positives were the Freuchie tea, and that we were able to get back up the road to watch the 2nds win the Bon Accord Cup. A game to forget, and one game too many in an otherwise successful season. The Glenrothes bandwagon rolls on to the National League where they could pose problems for the big 2 in Aberdeen.
