Largo v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 02 May 2026 at 12:00 Noon
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report Gordonians CC travelled to the unknown territory of Leven, Fife to play Largo CC on 2nd May. This was the first away fixture of the season and also first game on a grass wicket after more than a year! Exam season is full on and Gordonians 1st XI were missing quite a few regular contenders. This paved way for a number of newcomers to the club to showcase their skills at this level!

Gordos Skipper Indy won the second toss in a row and decided to bowl first on a very decent looking deck! Chamia opened the bowling along with Indy and the duo started off the spell tidy but the first breakthrough didn’t come until 6th over when Indy found the outside edge of the opener. A very good low catch by keeper Yanki! In the next couple of overs Chamila trapped the no.3 Rowley LBW on a full toss! This followed by Indy bowling the other opener Das in the next over with a peach! Scored read 36 for 3 after 11. Next up Shamim took charge from Indy’s end and bowled a very tidy and controlled spell. On the other end, the newcomer Hannan switched with Chamila and he made that bowling end his own! He bowled with a short run up but at an exciting pace which was refreshing to see for the keeper and slip fielders, maybe not so much for the batters though. Both Shamim and Hannan kept things at check and didn’t let the 2 key Largo batsmen at the crease let loose. Boundaries were not easy to come by due to the lush outfield and the Largo batsmen were trying to compensate that with running hard between the wickets. However an error in judgement ensued due to a brilliant chase to the boundary and superb throw by Suraj meant Largo’s main man Hugh was short of his ground! This was a key moment in the game as Largo did not recover from this blow and staring down the barrel! Few cameos by the lower middle order kept the scoreboard ticking but regular fall of wickets meant the run flow never really picked any momentum. Thanks to a brilliant full quota spell by Hannan and ably supported by Nadeem from the other end! Abu was waiting patiently for his turn to showcase all the hard work he has been putting in during the winter months! He bowled a tidy first over to get his rhythm right but what followed in the next over was incredible! He literally swept the tail with 3 clean bowls, that too in 3 consecutive deliveries – the first Hat-trick of the season by Gordos! Largo finished on 105 all out in 32 overs.

After tea Gordonians opened the batting with young Ayaan and swashbuckling Sabbir. Ayaan chased one outside the off and was caught at slip in the second over. In comes captain Indy at no. 3. He started cautiously but at the other end Sabbir was getting impatient for no obvious reason and he fell in a similar fashion like last week, bowled through the gate while trying to slog! This brought in Yanki at the crease a lot earlier than he was expecting (or maybe he wasn’t!!). Indy looked comfortable and started playing his shots but a sharp incutter disturbed his off stump and sent him packing for 11! Gordos lost 3 wickets for less the 30 runs on the board, yet again! Next man Hannan, along with Yanki steadied the boat and kept the scoreboard ticking. Yanki scored a few eye-catchy boundaries during this partnership and the pair ran well between the wickets too. Hannan’s stumps were disturbed by Hugh when a ball kept tad low. Gorods were back in the corner and next man in was debutant Suraj. He looked solid for a brief period but could not negotiate well with a sharply rising ball and played on. Gordos lost half of their batting with still more than half way to go! Emad was next man and although he looked nervous to start with but he slowly started to find the middle of his bat. Together with Mayank, they started building a useful partnership which got Gorodonians closer to the target. However, Largo’s most effective bowler on the day, Rowley, was brought into the attack and his gentle medium pace was causing havoc! Mayank was playing him well until he holed out at the long on boundary, out for a quickfire 28! Next man in was vastly experienced Chamila who rescued Gordos from similar situations in the past in numerous occasion but today was not one of those days! He was foxed out by Rowley with a slower one and was bowled. Gordos still needed 25 to win with only 3 wickets left. Last week’s not out batsman Nadeem walked in to finish the job but he was also fell victim to Rowley’s slowlys (not sure that’s a word) without troubling the scorers! Still fresh from the hat-trick adrenaline, Abu Zar walked in confidently and built a decisive partnership with Emad which took Gordos tantalizingly close to the target. Gordos developed a habit of causing dramas of late and a mix up in running caused another wicket loss at 101! Abu walked back, complaining he was following crowd’s instruction to run 2 instead of his partner at crease. Shamim with his new MRF bat was equally excited and nervous to go in the middle but along with Emad, they survived another close run out scare but eventually got over the line! Another win secured by Gordos but not without the required drama!

Gordos will play their first ever home game at Gordon Park next week when they host a strong travelling side of Falkland 2.
