Kilmarnock v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sun 13 May 2018 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 184 runs
Match report
The forecast proved correct as ASI Gordonians left the sometimes torrential rain of Aberdeen behind them and pitched up at the sunny Scott Ellis Recreation Ground in Kilmarnock. Some unexpected overnight rain had given the pitch a sporty nature and helped the flora and fauna of the outfield to come to bloom. The length of the grass made the boundaries to the west and north seem distant prospects. Kilmarnock won the toss and opted to bowl first. Devadas and Ahmed took their time to assess the wicket as the bounce proved a little variable. A top edge off a short ball swirled up in the air and Flanagan made a very valiant running attempt to take it over his shoulder, and quite possibly would have succeeded if he had been in his regular wicketkeeping attire. The ball found its way to the turf and the opening partnership duly flourished with Sree pulling the first 6 of the match slightly south of cow corner. Having scored 132 the previous day, Abrar set about accumulating the dot balls he had evidently missed the day before and it took him 25 balls before he smashed one over the boundary. The score had moved to 42 before Sree cut straight to point for 21. Himanshu took a look at the first 5 balls and then proceeded to take a run off almost every ball. The length of the grass was turning boundaries in to 2's and the runs had to be taken rather than risk admiring a shot that was snared pre-rope. Abrar was first to his half century off 77 balls, quickly followed by Himanshu off only 46 deliveries. The ground is surrounded by a high green fence, but it wasn't high enough as Himanshu took a couple of steps down the pitch and deposited Munir in to the wilderness. A further 4 and 6 immediately followed as the ring of Cow saw 3 fielders populating a 35 yard radius, the long grass taking care of a portion of the off side. With the partnership on 130, Abrar was bowled by Munir for 61, 11 overs remaining. A period of accumulation ensued as Gordonians found gaps in the field with ease. Himanshu holed out for 92 off only 70 balls, and Swapnil and Mayank both hit maximums as the score rattled up to 247 for 5 off the permitted 40 overs.
With such a good total to chase, Kilmarnock couldn't hang around, and Flanagan cracked the last ball of the 2nd over from Chamila for 6 over the unguarded cow corner. Shuja hit a glorious 4 off Himanshu next over, but a maiden from Chamila generated pressure. Shuja cut in the air straight to Mayank off Himanshu, and then Chamila was on a hat trick as Munir was given LBW and then the stumps of Ali were rearranged. The field crowded in and Abdullah blocked comfortably but the double wicket maiden was averted as the umpire extended it to 7 balls, a single being taken. Next over and Abdullah was LBW to Himanshu. 20 for 4 became 28 for 5 as Flanagan picked out Mayank to give Chamila his 3rd wicket. 2 overs without a wicket and Himanshu was replaced by Dalgarno. If ever a pitch was designed for Stuart, then this was it, and he didn't disappoint, Walsh picking out the safe hands of Mayank 5th ball. He followed this with a wicket maiden, and then picked up a 3rd wicket next over with a bit of help from Himanshu. 5 runs off his next over saw him whipped out of the attack and Mayank came on to pick up a caught and bowled. At the other end, Aayush had beaten the bat regularly with his leg spin, but it was a googly that bowled Mirza to finish off the Kilmarnock innings at the start of the 22nd over for a total of 63.
Kilmarnock will be left to wonder what might have happened it they had held numerous dropped catches, whilst Gordonians will be wondering what the score would have been if shots on the ground had given proper value.
