Gordonians Cricket Club Won 19 runs
Match report
ASI Gordonians won the toss and decided to bat, a decision which probably reduced the chances of a bat for their Scottish Under 13 Cup winning captain Adi Hegde, who was making his competitive debut for the 1st XI. The boundaries looked shorter than usual, the outfield was cut short, and the pitch was hard, so it looked like a day for the batsmen to get in and score big. Wood opened the bowling to Devadas and a full toss above waist high was crashed to the leg side boundary, the free hit also going to the boundary. Elliot at the other end struggled with his line, but this teased Devadas in to chasing a widish one and Grant Jamieson took an easy catch a slip. Saraswat wasn't hanging around and had rattled along to 17 when he played one shot too many as he missed a delivery from Elliot. 6 overs gone and 43 for 2, and the run feast was replaced by occupation of the crease. The ever reliable Gamblen replaced Elliot and he bowled to a well set field, strangling the run scoring, and picking up the wicket of Sandy Richards who didn't go aerial enough past mid on, caught by Haddon for 10. 58 for 3 after 12 overs and the par score was being downgraded as it became evident that accumulation of runs was going to prove more productive than throwing the bat at the ball.
Wood was rested and replaced by Will Anderson, and his extra bit of pace helped the batsmen penetrate the fielding ring, 21 runs coming off his 3 overs before Doley was brought on to see if the pitch was going to take spin. Rane and Arora added 71, primarily in 1's and 2's, and whilst this was the professionalism the innings required, the lack of boundaries reflected the conditions. An unexpected quicker ball from Doley seemed to catch Rane by surprise and he only managed to scoop the ball to Elliot, out for 28. Bhandari was very watchful as he offered good support to Arora, but a glorious drive was somewhat diminished by the lack of bat on ball, and the consequent ball on stumps as Haddon removed him for 7. To make matters worse for the visitors, Arora got his timing wrong in the next over and gave Doley another wicket, caught for 55 and the score now 160 for 6 at the start of the 35th over. Wig and Bhalani have both batted well this season, and with the pressure on, they both delivered as they mixed aggression with good running to add 67 in just over 10 overs. Wood had been brought back on to try to end the partnership but a second full toss above the waist brought his spell to an end, the ball being smacked for 4. Wig was on 46 when he clunked Elliot straight over his head, and what looked like a maximum, disappointingly dropped in to the hands of the waiting Haddon. Bhalani chipped an easy catch to Wood but when he inexplicably spilled it, a tight single was turned in to a very unlikely 2. Bhalani was unbeaten on 22 as Gordonians totalled 233 for 6 off their 45 overs.
Bhalani and Saraswat opened the bowling for Gordonians and Anderson and Jamieson both looked in the mood to keep their wickets intact whilst exploiting the gaps in the field as Gordonians went for wickets. The 50 partnership came up in the 11th over and Arora took himself on to see if he could work his magic with the ball. Hegde came on at the other end, and when his first ball was cracked to the boundary, those watching must have been wondering if this might be the only over for the youngster. Jamieson gives the ball an almighty clunk at the best of times, and and having got to 37 he launched the full face of the bat at a full delivery from Arora, and missed it, the partnership ending on 76. Hegde had settled on to a decent line and length and it took another 38 balls before he was hit for a boundary. A run out brought Haddon in to bat, and with Anderson showing great determination, they kept the scoreboard ticking over. Arora brought himself back on and got the breakthrough as Haddon smashed the ball back at him, a superb caught and bowled, Haddon out for a run a ball 36. Horne went tamely in the same over and Doley came in to support Anderson who had got a second wind and was scoring regularly. When the going gets tough, you can choose your cliches, and Devadas was as cool as a cucumber in a deep freeze in December in Iceland (country or the store), and he hit the stumps from the full length of the pitch to run out Doley as a minor mix up became more serious for the home side. 163 for 5 became 163 for 6 as Findlay was cleaned up by Rane first ball. This brought in Gamblen who isn't shy of a good scamper between the wickets, and this was going to be the make or break partnership for Mannofield. 9 overs left and 71 to win and the dot balls were becoming a rarity and the fielding was starting to crack. 46 runs were added in good time and the watching Mannofield players were sensing a win. 23 needed off 14 balls and Gamblen missed one from Rane, Devadas didn't, and the bails were off with Gamblen the wrong side of the line. Wood was next in and he immediately attempted a full blooded heave which failed to connect, and the stumps were rearranged. 2 overs to go and 23 runs still needed and the focus shifted from the result to Anderson who had moved to 97. Singles took him to 99 and then Devadas was in to the action again to stump Govil off Arora. Elliot blocked out the last 2 deliveries of the over to leave Anderson on strike for the last over, and hands were prepared to greet a well deserved ton. Ever the competitor, and not following the Mannofield script, it was Rane who was to be celebrating a hat trick as he produced a superb delivery to end the 130 ball effort of Anderson. 176 minutes of concentration was brought to an end and ASI Gordonians had won by 19 runs in the last over.
