Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI v Stoneywood Dyce on Sat 05 May 2018 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 79 runs
Match report
Stoneywood Dyce were first to arrive at Countesswells and bagged the first choice of changing room in the new pavilion. Gordonians won the toss and asked league champions Stoneywood Dyce to bat. Liam Lindsay got off the mark with a boundary from the first ball, and he moved in to double figures in the 2nd over with another boundary. 2 maidens followed from Himanshu and Chamila and then young Stuart Lister picked up a 3 off a very thick outside edge to get off the mark. Himanshu then had to leave the field briefly, and whilst he was away, Chamila removed Lister lbw for 10. Bhalani started a spell from the Donny Reid house end and his 6 over spell only had 7 scoring shots taken from it, and a brief moment of excitement for one fielder, who hadn't realised it was a free hit from a no ball as Stander was caught short of the boundary. Stander is now firmly in the ex-international category, but a relatively flat 6 over long off had shown that he could still do damage at this level, and he was accumulating nicely when he snicked behind off Rane for 25 in the 22nd over.
The drinks break was duly taken with the score on 79 for 2, but the refreshments didn't have a refreshing effect on the Gordonians bowlers as Mitchell joined Lindsay to tick the scoreboard over for a prolonged period. 16 overs together yielded a 74 run partnership including a maximum from Lindsay to bring up his half century. He was eventually caught by Himanshu off Arora for 68 with the score on 153, and Dalton joined Mitchell as they took the score to 199 for 3 off 45 overs. Mitchell was unbeaten on 35, and Dalton not out on 24 as the Gordonians fielding started to look slightly ragged, but with 7 Stoneywood Dyce wickets still standing, Gordonians were probably feeling that their opponents could have been throwing the bat a little bit more towards the end. 199 looked a par score.
King opened to debutant Sutton who got the legs of Arora moving 2nd ball as he dabbed a quick single. It was coach to coach as Kidd bowled to Sutton, Kidd bang on first ball, rattling the stumps of Sutton, and then finding himself on a hat trick as Mauzzam was pouched by Mitchell at slip. Mayank was elevated to number 4 and saw off the hat trick, but King induced an edge in the 5th over, comfortably held by Mitchell at slip. 10 for 3 became 21 for 4 as King yorked Arora. Himanshu is the in form man, and he was hastening a break for Kidd as he went 2,2 4, dot, 4....and another 4 looked on the cards as he flashed hard and high...only for Mitchell to take a worldy, plucking the ball out of the air behind him to remove Himanshu for a rapid 30, and now 47 for 5. Gordonians bat all the way down on paper, and Swapnil and Imran were severe on anything loose, as they posted the first 50 partnership of the season for Gordonians.
With the score on 101 in the 20th over, a rush of blood from Imran saw him try to launch Mitchell for 6, only for King to steady himself below the ball and end the partnership with Imran gone for 23. From there the next 4 wickets fell for 19 runs with some poor shot selection, Rane last to go, his stumps splayed by Grant for an otherwise dominant 36. The total of 120 had been made in rapid time, the innings concluding in the 27th over, but despite an array of batting talent, Gordonians seem to have lost the ability to bat an innings.
