Falkland v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 28 Apr 2018 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 97 runs

Match report Turns out Falkland is that bit further than you might think, and not all phone apps take you to the ground! Falkland won the toss, and elected to bat. The unexpected call to field exposed the lack of fielding preparation that Gordonians had managed prior to the start of the match, although the less than convincing fielding could also be attributed to the general lack of fielding practice due to the wetness of the grass in Aberdeen.
Campbell and Meikle opened for Falkland and regularly played and missed at Saraswat and Perera. Meikle had a crack at one from Perera which swirled skyward, but the fielder couldn't quite get settled in position to take it. They had added 29 in the 8th over when Meikle repeated the stroke, but this time Abrar got feet, legs and hands sorted, and Meikle was gone for 10. The last time Matthew Surry batted against us he scored a superb ton, but this time his stay only lasted 4 balls as Himanshu uprooted his stumps. This brought in the Falkland Pro Harsha Cooray, who had averaged over 50 in the EPL last season. He was defensively solid and dealt severely with the rare poor ball. They took the score to 70 before Gordonians unleashed the spin of Rane. 3rd ball, and a rare bit of bounce outside off, and Campbell guided it slowly to point, out for 29. Next over from Rane and he had Cooray turning around in disbelief as the ball beat his defences and bowled him for only 16. Arora came on to see if he could get amongst the wickets but Strachan smacked his first ball for 4. Overseas amateur Darren Pearce tonked Rane for 6 but next ball he suffered the same fate as Cooray. 24 overs gone and Falkland 95 for 5, and Gordonians looked on top. Another 2 maiden overs and then the tide began to turn. With Watson batting responsibly at one end, Ben Strachan at the other end just hit it harder and further. Somewhere in the carnage, they took a single to Chamila who hit both sets of stumps, both batsmen surviving strong appeals, and duly abandoning the quick single option. The total had moved to 164 in the 38th over before Watson was trapped lbw for 16 by the returning Saraswat. New batsman Ferguson was looking for runs at every opportunity, but Strachan was now scoring off almost every ball, and Wig was bearing the brunt of the assault. 2 copy book 6's and then Wig pouched an excellent return catch to send Strachan to the side lines, but not before he had plundered 81 off 76 balls. Gallagher was run out off the last ball, but the final 7 overs had produced 60 runs, and the match seemed well and truly in the bag for the home side.
Devadas and Arora played and missed at Hepburn, but runs were ticking over, and putting Gordonians ahead in the scorebook. The 5th over saw Devadas a bit surprised to be given lbw to Hepburn for 12, but Hepburn was showing all his experience as Imran flashed 2 thick edges to the boundary. The score was on 40 at the start of the 8th over when Hepburn picked up another lbw, this time Imran the victim. 76 on the board and Arora another lbw capture for Hepburn, out for 24. At the othe end Saraswat was in fine form, but with Strachan replacing Hepburn, wickets began to tumble. Mauzzam clean bowled, Wig another lbw, and then disaster for Gordonians as Saraswat on 43 was the 5th lbw of the innings. Swapnil and Abrar put up some resistance but both were clean bowled by Strachan. Mayank went the same way, and then Cooray had Chamila lbw, Gordonians all out for 127. Strachan finished with an impressive and richly deserved 6 for 20.
Cricket may be a team game, but it just takes one on form player to win a match, and Strachan made the game look easy as he picked up any man of the match award that was going.
