Match report The 3 Counties Cup draw meant one of the favourites would exit the competition at the preliminary stage. With Aman stuck in traffic, Forbes lost the toss and had to sort out an opening pair. Sree was sent in with debutant Sandy Richards. Little did anyone know this was going to be a match that would have been suitable to host the AGM of the active members of the National Nail Biters Association.
Traditionally a high scoring venue, 13 off the first 3 overs seemed slow, but 16 from the next 2 overs with no wickets lost suggested a very useful platform had been built.
The decision to bring on Kidd brought a surprise maiden over, made worse by the loss of Richards to a run out for 11. Next to go was Sree for 22 with the score on 52, followed a few overs later by Himanshu for 26 including a maximum and three 4's. Abrar wasn't hanging around and avoided too many dot balls as he took the score to 96 for 3. He had made 23 when he fell to the last ball of the 13th over. The introduction of Lindsay to the bowling attack signalled an epic collapse, 6 wickets falling in 20 deliveries for the addition of only 4 runs. 96 for 3 had become 100 for 9, and the chances of Gordonians retaining the cup looked in tatters. Perera and Dalgarno batted out the 20 overs and added 15 before the innings closed.
At a required rate of less than 6 an over, the writing looked on the wall as Forbes went for 11 off the opening over. With no hurry to score runs, Reid batted out a maiden from Chamila and only 3 runs came off an over from Swapnil. The score had advanced to 43 before Reid was bowled by Abrar, Reid having made his 5 off 20 balls, and giving the umpires a report to do by hitting his stumps. Arora had brought himself on, but after one over decided to switch ends, and this turned out to be an inspired move. It was 59 for 1 at the end of the 10th over, but the introduction of Himanshu delivered the prize wicket of Lindsay, well caught by Richards for 43. Arora then bowled a beauty to rearrange the stumps of Maclaren with the first ball of the next over, repeating the delivery with the last ball of the over to account for Mitchell. In to the 13th over and Rayner was run out for a duck, followed 4 balls later by Hood, another clean bowled victim for Arora. Next over and Davidson caught and bowled by Himanshu, then Squire bowled Arora for 4, the score having moved from 59 for 1 to 79 for 8.
An unlikely 33 required off 3 overs and Grant and Kidd suddenly started making batting look easy. 14 off a Swapnil over and then 8 from a Forbes over, and it was 11 required off the final over from Chamila. A boundary by Kidd off the first ball and victory in sight. Then an attempt to turn a single in to a 2 failed as Debo coolly threw in to Sree and Kidd was short of his ground. He had scored 19 to keep the game alive, but this brought King in at number 11, and with 3 balls left he gave Richards the chance to be a hero, lunging forward to scoop up a catch inches from the ground, and game over. Grant was 14 not out, and Gordonians had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in a remarkable game.
