Match report The lingering effects of the heavy rain on Thursday gave Donny some early morning headaches prior to the visit of Dunnikier. Thankfully a bit of sunshine and a favourable breeze helped dry things out to allow play to start on time.
Swapnil won the toss and elected for some batting practice. Sree and Hamza negotiated the first over comfortably and then were gifted some bonus runs as Sarwar looked like he hadn't bowled for a few weeks. A couple of 'hit me' deliveries were duly dispatched by Sree, and 16 runs rattled up off the 2nd over, completing a brief spell for Sarwar. He was replaced by Sarfraz, and Sree was soon left kicking himself as he played on for a quick 15.
Whilst Dunnikier settled down to a steady bowling pattern, the biggest danger to Gordonians was if they chased runs too quickly, so Swapnil and Hamza gave it loads of concentration as they accumulated runs whilst waiting for the bad ball. Hamza threatened to break loose, following up a couple of 4's by cracking Rowley for the first 6 of the match over wide long on, but the introduction of spin from Sharif slowed the scoring again. The drinks break rarely helps the batting side, and having tonked Rowley for another maximum, Hamza didn't get hold of another effort and was caught for 44. 2 overs later and Swapnil was bowled for 20, soon to be followed by Abrar, but not before he had launched Sharif for a big 6.
Himanshu has rarely looked troubled this season, until he has got out, but he chipped in with 21, and unbeaten knocks of 22 and 7 from Chamila and Aayush hoisted the total to 189 for 8 off 40 overs.
The usual tea for 2 didn't quite cover the multitudes who appeared for food, and even the caramelised (slightly over cooked!) pizza was scoffed.
With rain potentially due, Gordonians had to be careful that they kept the Dunnikier run rate down, and the opening over from Mayank added 10 to the scoreboard. An early wicket for Himanshu, and Mayank clean bowling Rafi for a duck, reduced Dunnikier to 19 for 2, soon to be 28 for 3 as Himanshu had Sharif caught behind for a single.
The Yousaf and Yousaf combination never looked at ease, but they added 42, keeping ahead of extras which were ticking over consistently. Swapnil brought himself on and 2 wicket maidens removed the Yousafs including a blaster of a caught and bowled. Debo got a rare chance to bowl and only had 5 scoring shots taken off his 5 overs. A couple of rain interruptions were followed by the introduction of Scott Rowell to the attack, and he took 3 for 11 in 3 overs to finish the Dunnikier resistance. Mayank took 2 steepling catches which brought back memories of the cup final victory over Kilmarnock in 2015. Dunnikier were all out for 133 in 37 overs, aided by 33 wides, but if Gordonians had held their catches then this could have been over in half the time.
Gordonians will play Kelso in the semi final at Countesswells, and they will be looking to get revenge for their defeat in last years final.
