Strathmore v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
A glorious day greeted the teams at Forfar. Strathmore won the toss and elected to bat, probably regretting that decision 2 balls later, as the prolific Stevenson edged Forbes to Rane at slip. The final ball of the 4th over brought further rewards for Gordonians as Milne played the right shot, unfortunately to the wrong ball, as Himanshu fooled him with a rare slower delivery which rattled the stumps as Milne completed his follow through. Shoaib looked in an aggressive mood but smashed one off the edge which brought out the best in Sree, completing a stunning reflex catch to give Forbes another wicket. Next over, and Gourlay tamely cut Himanshu to point for a duck, Strathmore 24 for 4.
Simpson had watched the carnage unfold at the other end, and with Gary Hewitson joining him, he started to build a superb knock, being particularly severe on anything short. They had added 30 before Mayank bowled Hewitson for 6. Wilkie perished for a duck in the next over as Hamza made a mess of his stumps, and it was looking bleak for Strathmore at 55 for 6.
Grant played and missed at a few, but obstinately stuck in whilst Simpson played some top shots. A partnership of 62 had become somewhat annoying, so Swapnil brought himself on and duly bowled Simpson first ball, out for an excellent 62. Hamza bowled Ahmed for 4, and Grant then looked to have a go at Swapnil, but saw his stumps rearranged for a 42 ball score of 10.
With Simpson out of the way it was time for debutant Lewis Cameron to get a bowl, and he was right on the money from the start, line and length, and working up a decent pace. Having opened with a maiden he picked up the wicket of McDonald to finish with 1 for 1, Strathmore all out for 131, which included 23 wides and some lacklustre ground fielding from Gordonians.
New recruit Wilkie was working up quite a pace with the new ball, but it was Grant at the other end who almost got the breakthrough as Stevenson dived to his right to almost pull off a blinding catch. As the ball hit the deck, Sree set off for an unlikely run, and was out by a distance as the throw from Stevenson was stump high for the keeper. Worse followed as Hamza was lbw not playing a shot to Wilkie, and Himanshu was caught behind off the same bowler for nought.
You could hardly get more conflicting batting styles than those of Aayush and Abrar, but their partnership flourished as Aayush got the dead bat out to Grant, and Abrar took the battle to Wilkie. Abrar cracked some glorious boundaries, including the only 6 of the match, and had moved to 47 before Stevenson bamboozled him, tickling his stumps to end a 62 run partnership. Aayush may only have scored 11, but his 84 minute vigil had steadied a very wobbly state of affairs, but he was another victim for Stevenson, lbw with the score on 77.
Swapnil looked very solid and hit a couple of classy boundaries before a catastrophic calling calamity with Praful saw the skipper comfortably run out for 9. 89 for 6 was looking precarious, but after playing and missing a few times to the returning Wilkie, Mayank played a couple of imperious cover drives, which took away the risk of running. Milne may still be wondering how he dropped Praful at mid off, and Simpson couldn't get the gloves together a couple of times to snicks standing up, but a partnership of 39 took Gordonians to the cusp of victory, before Mayank was caught behind for 23. Praful then smashed the first ball from Ahmed to the leg side boundary to end the contest in the 38th over.
On one hand Gordonians had made hard work of things, but on the other hand, Strathmore can look back and think this was an opportunity missed as they lacked the concentration to bat their overs.
