Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI v Arbroath United on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 68 runs
Match report
Arora won the toss again and decided to bat against a youthful Arbroath side. It looked a batting pitch but Christie and Ross were giving little away, and whilst Sree was cracking the ball to the boundary now and again, it was an unusually becalmed Arora who was lbw in the 8th over having only managed 3 scoring shots in 27 balls. Sandy Richards took up where Arora had left off, looking defensively sound, but just not getting a hold of the ball when trying to attack, but this wasn't a concern as Sree moved up a gear to pass 50 off only 60 deliveries.
Darryl Sinclair had been brought on first change and proceeded to bowl 6 balls short of length, but the harder the Gordonians batsmen tried to hit the ball, the less distance it went. Thankfully for Arbroath, Sinclair settled on to a better length, but even then it was a surprise when he bowled Sree for 56. Mark Fleming doesn't always get the wickets he deserves, and he was wicketless until the last ball of his last over, a rare misjudgement by Sandy seeing him lbw for a very patient but valuable 16.
Carnegie had brought himself on to bowl and Himanshu had decided that the long handle was required, smacking a towering 6, but in attempting to repeat the dose next ball, he only picked out the safe hands of Ross, gone for 16. Abrar made 28 but even he couldn't get in to a rhythm with his batting, and it was left to Rane and Forbes to plunder some late runs and take Gordonians to a respectable 194 for 8 off their 45 overs.
On paper, only Edwards, Carnegie and Sinclair had the experience to lead a meaningful run chase, and when Chris had Edwards lbw 3rd ball, the writing looked on the wall for Arbroath. Carnegie backs himself to play his shots, and straight from the off he served notice that he was in the mood, driving effectively and looking in no trouble. Having rattled along to 24 in no time, he chased a wide one from Chris and snicked behind. 4 balls later and O'Mara fell to Himanshu, bringing Sinclair in who proceeded to show just how he has matured, as he looked to have lots of time to caress the ball all around the wicket. Enter Arora, and exit Sinclair, as he edged 2nd ball of the over to Devadas.
Surely game over with Arbroath 63 for 4 in the 13th over. Duncan and Patterson hadn't read the 'let's get this over with before the rain comes' script, and looked thoroughly at ease, albeit the scoring rate slowed markedly. They found Rane particularly hard to score from and he eventually found his way through to the stumps of Patterson, out for 12. Fleming was comfortably caught by Dalgarno off the next over from Rane, the total now on 89 for 6.
The time had come to bring on deadly Dalgarno, the bowling equivalent of Gary Lineker, sniffing around for easy wickets in conditions that really suited him, and he didn't disappoint, taking 2 wickets in his first over, the second to a catch that even surprised Forbes.
Felix Ford batted like a dream at one end, whilst Ross and Christie fell in to the annoying tail ender category, helping the scoreboard to tick over as the clouds got as dark as they could without depositing copious amounts of heavy rain. Dalgarno bowled Ross to end up with figures of 3 for 12, and Mayank bowled Christie with his 3rd ball, leaving Ford high and surprisingly dry on 13. All out for 126, Arbroath had always been ahead of the required run rate, but an obviously talented bunch of young cricketers just lacked the experience to bat out the overs. The rain duly appeared as the players left the pitch.
