Dundee High v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
With a few 1st team regulars unavailable, this gave debuts to Khosla, Godson and Dalgarno for the trip to Dundee. The latter 2 were clearly not used to life on the road, turning down the traditional McDonalds stop, preferring a stop at Morrisons for bananas!! Questions have to be asked as we seem to have selected athletes for the 1st team, certainly not Club policy!
On paper Dundee had a solid side with a few potential match winners, but it was still a bit of a surprise when they chose to bat having won the toss. Jim Braid will never get an IPL contract, but the longer you let him bat, the more likely Dundee will build partnerships around him. Ramalingam is a much admired player but was undone by a beauty from Krutik in the 4th over which homed in on the top of off stump, bowled for 1. It was a major boost when Braid snicked Forbes in the next over at a perfect height for the safe hands of Swapnil at slip. Unfortunately his hands got nowhere near it, preferring the more spectacular thud to the chest, hoping for a rebound method. This method evidently needs more practice as the ball dropped to the grass.
Wides kept the scoreboard ticking with a couple failing to bounce and shooting past the gloves of Mayank to the boundary, not helped by a couple of experienced players forgetting they were fielding on a rugby pitch and the long barrier should have been deployed.
Having had a few LBW appeals turned down, Himanshu decided the secret must be to go round the wicket to the left handed Braid, and sure enough his next LBW appeal was successful. The score had advanced to 31, Braid having made it to 9 having survived being dropped when the team score had been on 6.
Dalgarno had also been brought on and had bowled a creditable maiden first up. His 2nd over was not quite so convincing as he learned what would happen at this level if you dropped it short. Swapnil kept the faith and Stuart was rewarded in his 3rd over as 2 wickets came his way. Aussie keeper Russell was fooled by a full toss, unable to keep it down, and Krutik made the catch look easier than it really was. Ejaz then clipped a leg side half volley to Debo at square leg and it was now 48 for 4. Having crunched Stuart over wide cover for 4, new batsman Khan went for it again but only succeeded in spooning it up in the air. This is where the banana energy and athleticism kicked in as Dalgarno got a sprint on and completed the caught and bowled.
Their other Aussie Pettit, had been patiently playing himself in, but the clatter of wickets persuaded him that it was time to play a few shots. He had been joined by Lawty who demonstrated a text book defence whilst looking out for anything loose. They put on 30 before Arora burst one back through the defences of Lawty, repeating the delivery to Shogun Johnny 3 balls later. 78 for 7 and early season rustiness was much in evidence as danger man Rasheed joined the battle. One unconvincing boundary was followed by a mistimed shot that was easily pouched by Krutik.
Skipper Milne was determined to anchor down and let Pettit do the scoring but a quick edge off Rane allowed Mohit to demonstrate remarkable reflexes and take a stunning catch at slip. Coming in at 11 suggests Hopkins may not be the best bat in the Dundee side but we didn't get much chance to find out as he inspired Pettit to tonk Swapnil for 2 boundaries, before another big wind up was missed, Mayank lining up a stumping by cunning deflection off the pads, Pettit out for 26 and Dundee for a below par 98 in the 31st over.
31 extras had been conceded but other runs had been saved by the sprinting of Godson and Dalgarno and the sharpness of Karan. Arora picked up 3 for 14 and Dalgarno 3 for 17, but Krutik had impressed the Dundee boys with his 4 over opening burst.
A couple of wides from Hopkins eased the early batting pressure as did a couple of no balls from Milne at the other end. Neither bowler looked particularly fluent but despite getting a long stride in, Debo was LBW for 7 in the 4th over. Arora survived an early drop although it had been middled at an awkward height to the fielder. Himanshu didn't take long to get his eye in and a 4 and a 6 forced a bowling change. Rasheed put in plenty of effort but only had a short spell. Himanshu was particularly severe on Johnny who only got the one over. Leg spinner Pettit was in the slot for Arora who hit consecutive boundaries and was looking in ominous form. With the score on 60 the introduction of Ramalingam brought some joy for Dundee as he slipped a quicker one past Himanshu who had made 23 off 21 balls. Krutik looked very secure until he got a quicker ball from Ramalingam that didn't get above his shoe laces and Karan, having demonstrated his faultless defence, fell to the same delivery 5 balls later. By now Arora had been caressing Pettit to the boundary on a regular basis, not really a pitch with much to offer a leg spinner no matter how good he might be. Mohit smacked a full toss to the leg side boundary and Arora drove Ramalingam for 4 to end the contest at the start of the 18th over. Arora was 44 not out including 9 boundaries off only 48 balls.
A brief visit to the adjacent Bowling Club for some cheap drink and a glimpse of some pristine flat grass set the boys up for the drive home.
