Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI v NoSCA Select on Sun 28 Jun 2015 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 3 runs
Match report
Overnight and early morning rain had put the match in doubt, but the covers kept the pitch dry and as the temperature rose the outfield dried considerably. Play began on time, and having lost the toss, Arrowdawn Gordonians were sent in to bat. Stockwell bowled a rare maiden to Sree but Wolton struggled a bit with his line as the score moved to 6. After that they settled in to tight lines and Stockwell had Sree caught by Farr for 3, a good recovery from Farr who had dropped him a few balls earlier. Arora was then lbw to Stockwell for 5 and Hamish joined Mayank to start the fairly familiar rebuild. Mayank smacked Wolton for 6 and was promptly bowled for 12. Sunny then took the score to 70 before being out for 14, followed by Rahul for 2, as Gordonians wobbled to 73 for 5. Debo was struggling to connect with his square drive, but a useful partnership with Hamish took the scoreboard to 92 before he was out to Numan who then had Swapnil stumped with the score on 100. Hamish was next to go for a well made 54 which included a 6 and 4 4's. The tail wagged, although it would be somewhat cruel to call Cam, Jason and Chris a tail, as they are all very competent, scoring 10, 6 not out, and 10 respectively, as Gordonians were all out in the 39th over for 146.
NoSCA had bowled and fielded sharply, the one surprise being that Stockwell had only bowled 5 overs, as his 2 for 14 had suggested he could have done more damage.
The NoSCA reply was soon in tatters as Rahul and Cam took 2 apiece to reduce them to 14 for 4, 3 catches for Sree, including one very smart one handed take. Dugdale never looked entirely comfortable but helped take the total to 49 before smacking one straight back to Hamish who rarely makes a mistake off his own bowling. Mehta joined Numan who was looking like a top class bat and they kept NoSCA in contention, taking the score to 100 before Numan skyed the 4th ball of new bowler Arora to the gleeful Lewis. 2 further wickets fell as NoSCA moved to 111 for 8 with the required rate looking beyond them. Mehta had been scoring off almost every ball and with belligerent support from Paul they made huge inroads in to the 147 target. Gordonians had missed a few run out opportunities and gifted a few overthrows, and with 5 required off the last over, NoSCA having scored 5 or more off the preceding 7 overs, were strong favourites to win. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, or rather, cometh the over, cometh the hero, the super hero, the megatiptoptasticticious supreme hero, ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Doctor at the Death, the one and only Aman Arora, the STUMP CRUNCHER. Having got Gordonians out of a similar mire at Rossie Priory, Arora started with a dot ball which was followed by the splaying of stumps as Paul was cleaned up for 18. Mehta the younger joined his elder brother and a dot was followed by a single. As NoSCA would have won if the scores were tied and they were not bowled out, it was 3 to win off 2 balls. Mehta was on 37 so had his eye in, but couldn't do anything with ball number 5 of the over, and with many a knee knocking on the sidelines, Arora duly made a mess of the stumps, and gave Gordonians a slim 3 run victory. Arora finished with 4 for 18 breaking many a NoSCA heart, and Gordonians move on to a home semi final.
