Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI v Arbroath on Sat 11 Jul 2015 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 96 runs
Match report
After hours of preparation, a belter of a pitch suffered somewhat as torrential rain hit Aberdeen on Tuesday afternoon. Water had charged under the covers and it was a remarkable effort by the Groundstaff to repair the damage and produce a playable pitch. Arbroath won the toss and put Gordonians in to bat on a drying wicket. The ball wasn't coming on to the bat, and with Christie and Burnett not offering up anything loose, this was old fashioned test match batting. Sree was first to go, bowled by Burnett trying to pull a ball that wasn't short enough. Stark was caught behind next over throwing the bat slightly down the wrong line at a half volley. Burnett rattled off 4 maidens in a row before Hamish decided his eye was in and smacked him over the top for a rare boundary. Swapnil had shown great patience before Christie snuck one through clipping his off bail. 40 for 3 became 48 for 4 as Hamish was out for 28, caught and bowled in the first over from Fleming. Arora looked as though this might be his day, but yet again he was pinned lbw as the scoreboard showed a distressing 59 for 5 in the 23rd over. Reddy was also due an innings and duly played himself in with good support from Debo. A partnership of 31 was ended with a yes, yes, shouldn't have, type of run out, as Debo went for 9. Pandit isn't familiar with batting at 8, but he was just the right man for the situation, slightly outscoring Sunny as they ticked over 36 valuable runs in 6 overs, before he was run out for 15. Cam was also run out, and this brought in Forbes who proceeded to make batting look ridiculously easy, plundering 28 off 15 balls whilst Sunny reached his 50, taking the total to an unexpected 172 for 8 off the 45 overs. This was probably about 40 over a par score with the lush outfield only allowing 8 boundaries.
On paper the Arbroath batting line up was going to need at least one of their top 5 to bat through, and score heavily, and they didn't need to lose Swan dead lbw to Cam for a duck in the 4th over. Shortly after, Riddler was undone by a one handed diving catch behind by Sree, another duck, and a wicket for Forbes. Sinclair coming in at 4 played and missed regularly, but the scoreboard ticked over as extras accrued and Jack Plomer looked more assured at the other end. Sinclair had scored 6 before he snicked behind off Swapnil and this brought in Arbroath captain Edwards for what would be the match defining partnership. Cam, Chris and Hamish had all bowled tightly, but Swapnil was after wickets, and the introduction of Arora induced an edge to the keeper from Plomer, who had been lucky to survive a few dropped catches, out for 28, the total now 62 for 4. Edwards followed next over, popping up a simple catch to Lewis at mid wicket for 11. 62 for 5 became 64 for 6, 7 and 8 as the Arbroath wheels came off. Arora clean bowled Fleming and Robb and then bottled the hat trick! Ross and Christie took the score to 73 before Ross middled one straight to Lewis off the returning Mackay, who added a bit of spice to the affair by fielding off his own bowling and pinging it back to the keeper, sparing no thought for the unfortunate Christie who was in front of the keeper. Extras took the score from 73 to 76, earning Arbroath a batting point, but Mackay then rattled the stumps of Christie to finish off a comprehensive win for Gordonians. A handshake followed, and all the Gordonians bowlers were able to check their figures in the scorebook with a great deal of satisfaction.
