Kinloch v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 16 May 2015 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
When you travel to a ground that you haven't played at before, the first challenge is to get there. Guided in to the heart of St Andrews by the infrastructure for the Open Golf Championship, the lads and the solitary wag, arrived safely at the ground, delighted to find they were on the main University pitch, in a spacious and heated changing room, but less enthralled by the biting wind blowing from the West.
Then the dilemma began. What to do if we won the toss? Bat or bowl is the traditional choice, but do you go with your head or your gut, or do you base your decision on the strengths or weaknesses of your opponents? Eventually it took the experienced voice of Mr Forbes to intervene, and suggest that this sounded like a toss to lose, and Swapnil duly obliged, as Kinloch elected to bat. At 4.24pm, and with hindsight, maybe not the best choice for the accumulation of bonus points.
Forbes opened the bowling and found the combination of a new ball and the strong wind hard to master, bowling 2 wides and a marginal waist high no ball, that was top edged and pouched at square leg. This illustrated the benefit of neutral umpires. At the other end, Cam was finding the conditions difficult, and a further 3 went in the wides column. 2 maidens were followed by the first wicket as Shakir feathered a Forbes delivery to the keeper. Saeed fell lbw to Cam in the 8th over, and then a mini collapse followed. Shoaib had taken 24 balls to get off the mark but had to watch on as Forbes had Bruno and Wig lbw, the hat trick ball being a bit of an anti climax. Cam was rested and Hamish opened with a maiden. Vayani then played the first attacking shot of note, cutting to the boundary, where it was hauled in by Mayank with about an inch to spare. This 3 was to be his only scoring shot as he was caught by Debo off Hamish next over, the score on 22 for 5. The wheels temporarily came off for Gordonians as a few catches were dropped, and with Shoaib joining Mcdonald at the same end, the fielders conspired to miss what should have been a 22 yard run out. Having put on a partnership of 17, including the only 2 boundaries of the innings, Mcdonald was smartly caught at slip by Arora off the returning Cam, who had switched ends, replacing Chris who had taken 3 for 17 off his 9 overs. Shoaib tried to force the scoring and was caught by Hamish off Cam next over for 12, his 92 minute stay showing that he was a very capable player. Mayank had taken the gloves from Sree who had injured a finger, and having dropped a dolly snick off Hamish, took a much sharper chance to hasten the end of the innings, with Cam and Hamish clearing out the tail, and Darri only getting the chance to bowl one over. 4 for 15 for Cam, and 3 for 11 from Hamish, were rewards for perseverance in tricky bowling conditions, as Kinloch were all out for 50 in the 28th over.
Much to the delight of the freezing scorers, Sree and Aman were not hanging around, and took the attack to the bowlers. Sree was dropped early but kept playing shots, Aman being less fortunate as he blasted a return catch to Wig who nonchalantly stuck a hand down and held on. Swapnil came in at 3, and in a flurry of runs, it was all over in the 8th over, Sree on 24 and Swapnil on 18.
Gordonians moved up to 2nd place in the league and will have a week to contemplate what to do if they win the toss away to Rossie Priory.
