Methlick v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 19 Apr 2014 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 142 runs
Match report
The sun was out as Gordonians pulled in to Methlick and warmed up with some largely impressive fielding and bowling practice. Gordonians opened with Devadas and Arora, and Devadas cut the first ball for 4 as Murphy dropped a loosener short and slightly wide. At the other end, Kennedy resumed where he probably left off at the end of last season, and every other season before that, by taking a prize scalp, clean bowling Arora for only 1. This brought Mitch to the crease and the runs duly began to flow, helped considerably by the Methlick fielders dropping some fairly comfortable catches on a regular basis. Sree retired when he got to 50 and Mitch was caught for 48, but both dodged numerous bullets along the way. Swapnil played with a very straight bat and it was a real surprise when he picked out a fielder and was gone for 3. Cam scored 14 but was far from fluent. Hamish looked solid and most things hit the middle of the bat before he first mistake spooned up in the air, gone for 27. Phani looked totally in control as he made 38, and Mayank looked in great form until the wily Addison sneaked one past the inside edge for an LBW, gone for 18. Debo was run out for 4 and this brought Aman Khan to the crease, and he immediately wrapped his bat around a couple of decent deliveries and cracked them to the boundary. Young Robert Kennedy bowled the last over and showed he has learned from his Dad as he pitched a couple up outside off which teased mistakes from Phani and Aman, the innings concluding with the score on 247.
The Methlick tea was excellent and Mitch hoovered up the sausage rolls and enough biscuits to have stocked a food bank.
By the time Methlick went in to bat the sun had long disappeared and hypothermia was a distinct possibility. Hamish bravely ditched his 2 sweaters and bowled a tidy opening maiden. Stuart Anderson top scored for Methlick with 22, and whilst he didn't score any boundaries, this was partly down to some very useful ground fielding by Gordos. 9 bowlers were used, and they all bowled well, although it was predictable that Mitch would struggle to get it right, a bit of a difference between bowling in 40 degree heat and the arctic conditions at Methlick in April. Swapnil had no such problems, taking 2 for 5 off 5 overs. It was left to Phani to mop up the tail, Methlick all out for 105.
If ever a game deserved a Curry Night after it, then this was it. A useful exercise for all concerned other than anyone stuck out umpiring!
