Fraserburgh v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI on Sat 10 May 2014 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 14 runs
Match report
A strong and balanced looking Gordonians team arrived at Fraserburgh well before the start time for their much awaited first competitive game of the season. Overcast weather, plenty of moisture in the air and a green damp pitch made it look like all but a bowler’s game and so it was. What reads from now on would make a strong contender for a script if Tarantino ever decides to make film on a game of cricket!
Rohit won the toss and put Fraserburgh in to bat. Fraserburgh started of cautiously against opening bowlers Rohit and Darri, with the number of overs often winning the race against runs scored! Darri drew the first blood when Watson’s faint edge was held neatly by ever reliable gloves of President Andy Lowden. Rohit’s first spell finished with plenty of troubling inswingers and dot balls. Chamila Perrera took over the torch from skipper and started causing chaos with his version of inswing bowling. C Bowie was the next man to get out to Chamila by miscuing a delivery that stopped a bit. Soon after that Chamila had O’Neil trapped in front for 5! Fraser’s outside edge flirted a lot with Chamila’s swingers until Darri had enough and bowled Fraser with an unplayable swinging Yorker! Runs were hard to come by but M Ironside kept the Fraserburgh innings together. New bowlers were introduced to break several dogged partnerships. Although they didn’t produce many runs but they were educational on how to bat on Broch pitch. Whether Gordonians were learning anything from it or not…well one have to read on!
Mathi, Kristof and Richard all bowled very well with a wet ball under a heavy rain shower. Gordonians might have leaked 10-15 odd runs too many during this period when game should have been halted. However, 2 wickets for Mathi in the middle overs and a proper mop up jobs by the returning opening bolwers Rohit and Darri sees the Fraserburgh innings folded on exactly 50 runs on the board at the end of 37 overs!
After a nice tea provided by home team, Gordonians looked to get on with the business. Small change in tactics mean Tremlett opening the batting with Karan. Trem didn’t last long and got trapped in front by Fraser on 4th ball. Pradeep George was in at 3 and formed a good partnership with Karan and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Pitch condition had worsened in the second innings as expected and brought in a new variety – unpredictable bounce! Pradeep was adjudged LBW by other opening bowler A Rennie for 6. Next man Indy Pandit looked to take the attack to the opposition and stayed positive. However, Fraserburgh’s own son Fraser was on a roll by now and found a deadly delivery to trouble Gordonian batsmen – full and straight on to the stumps! Gordonian batsmen fell one after another in the awe of this unplayable delivery and obliged Fraser(burgh) with 4 wickets, including 3 clean bowled, in the span of 4 overs. Indy probably felt bad for A Rennie and holed himself out to the only fielder on the boundary to make things even worse. With more than 70% team back in the hut, it was down to the experienced Andy Lowden and his rock solid defence to take Gordonians over the line. But it was not meant to be as Andy was busy playing out Fraser’s overs, with only 1 more left to finish his spell, A Rennie pulled his socks up and took matter in his own hands. He bowled Darri for 2 and in his second last over he had Gordonian’s skipper Rohit caught of short mid wicket to finish Gorodonians innings at 36! Only(!?) 14 short of required runs.
Despite the loss, there were plenty of positives to be taken out of this game in terms of bowling and fielding but batting wasn’t one of them. If this was bad for Gordonians, they will face a knightmare away at Groats road next weekend which already produced very low scoring games!
