Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI v Mannofield on Sat 17 May 2014 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
At last the weather allowed us to get on to the square at Countesswells, and as usual, we lost the toss and were put in to bat. Adam Dyson and Aman Arora gave the bowlers a left hand/right hand batting challenge, but this had no effect as Anderson and Chandu offered few scoring opportunities. Compliments to the square leg umpire for spotting that Mannofield had 3 outside the circle, but he somehow managed to call a no-ball before Anderson delivered, effectively creating a dead ball, and costing Gordonians a run. The delivery crease may be a fair distance from the middle but an assembly of keen no ball spotters, were somewhat perplexed as Anderson seemed to overstep 4 balls in a row, adding another 3, including one that looked a good 4 to 5 inches over, before the umpire eventually gave the scorers the one and only no ball of the match. The initial battle of the opening bowlers and batsmen had taken the score to 33 without loss after 12 overs, and this brought a double bowling change, and an instant reward for Mannofield as Van Oorschot had Adam caught off a ball that was short and wide and deserving to be cut somewhere other than to the keeper. Jamieson brought himself on at the other end and also dropped short, and was duly pulled behind square by Arora, who can count himself unfortunate that Niven dived full length to pull off a spectacular one handed catch. Both openers gone with the score on 34. Phani and Mitch then started the rebuild and after Mitch had his usual early luck, he knocked consecutive 4's off Jamieson. With the score on 52, Jamieson turned the game upside down as 3 wickets fell in his next over. Mitch snicked a dolly to gully, then Hamish pushed his 1st ball for an easy single, and was then promptly on his way back to the huts as Phani smashed one back at Jamieson who got a couple of fingers on the ball as it whistled in to the stumps giving Hamish no chance to make his ground. With Phani bowled next ball, Gordonians had slumped to 53 for 5. A good Captain knows when to bring himself off, and Jamieson bowled a dull over before introducing the scrooge like Niven, who rarely gives the batsmen any presents this side of Xmas. Swapnil and Indy took the score to 71 before Niven removed Swanil and Joe in the same over. Grayson then tempted Indy with a half tracker which he launched to the fielder on the square leg boundary, gone for 11. Debo then increased the Niven haul to 3 for 8 off 6 overs, and it was left to Aman Khan and Craig to bat time as they added a patient 11, taking the score to 92, before Anderson returned to rattle the stumps of Pettitt. Yet again Gordonians failed to bat the overs, leaving 5.4 overs in the Mannofield bank.
Mannofield are the Strathie Champions because they do what it takes to win the game and don't mind how long it takes to deliver the result. They started slowly and rarely got any faster. Pettitt on his return to 1st team bowling took 2 for 12 off his 9 overs. At the other end Joe and Hamish cranked up the speed but couldn't get any wickets. Aman Arora replaced Craig but had no luck. The introduction of Swapnil should have been a dawdle for the Mannofield guys as they have faced him in the nets for a while, but game conditions are different and he ripped through the Mannofield top and middle taking 5 for 20 off 9 overs. Predictably Aman Khan was brought on to tidy up the tail and obliged with a wicket 2nd ball and another 11 balls later to leave the Mannofield 10 and 11 with the task of getting another 3 to win. With a part of the Mannofield anatomy giving a collective squeak, they stumbled to victory, leaving Gordonians to regret a variety of shelled chances, including 2 of the easiest catches in the 90 year history of the Club.
Given that we were comfortably thrashed twice by Mannofield last season, this should have been 25 points in the bag and a signal that we would be challenging for the title. Jamieson probably shaded Swapnil for the Man of the Match award, but this was competitive cricket, albeit low scoring, at its best.
