Match report
The sun was out at Stoneywood for the first league match of the season. The pitch was a little moist at one end, but otherwise looked good, and Rahul had no doubt pondered long and hard before deciding he was going to bat first. He duly lost the toss and we were put in to bat anyway. Grant over pitched his 2nd ball and Sree creamed it to the cover boundary. This was an early contender for shot of the day, particularly when the final ball of the over pitched short and didn't get up, Sree bottom edging it on to the stumps as he tried to readjust his pull shot. The other opening bowler, Rosie, welcomed Arora to Stoneywood with a succession of full tosses, and the 8 off the over could have been more. Grant continued to use the pitch to full effect and Mitch didn't look comfortable as the ball beat the bat, caught the edge, hit the pad, and generally made run scoring a secondary consideration to survival. Rosie continued to bowl a full toss each over, and they were despatched harder and further each time. It was somewhat of a relief when Grant bowled out his 9 overs for 18 without taking another wicket, Rosie having already been hooked when his first 5 overs had gone for 38. He was replaced by young Owen Davies who did well to give his off spin some decent air as the temperature dropped. Mitch was next to go with the score on 77 having guided the ball wide of gully, called through by Arora, who made his ground easily, as Mitch started off slowly due to excessive ball watching, narrowly out to a direct throw, gone for 28. It was a surprise next over when Arora tamely lobbed up a catch to cover, having tanked Davies for 4 the ball before, gone for 43. Hamish got the straight bat out and started to accumulate runs until Davies pitched a ball half way down, which was duly middled straight to a slightly nervous looking fielder on the pavilion boundary. This led to a period of consolidation, and Swapnil and Mayank picked up singles as they established a platform for the rest of the innings. Shot making was not easy as the ball kept low and didn't come on to the bat, but the biggest danger to the batsmen was themselves as they sneaked a few sharp singles. Swapnil was eventually run out for a patient 17, but on reflection, the partnership of 39 had turned the game back in favour of Gordonians. Dyson took 10 balls to get off the mark as he demonstrated his immaculate forward defence, but Mayank was now in full flow and looked as though he was going to rack up his traditional season opening 50, so it was a major blow when he was bowled by Kevin Davies for 36. Dyson continued to persevere as his defence grew even more immaculate, and his patience eventually paid off as he crashed an imperious straight drive to the boundary. Kevin Davies showed a lot of faith in Rosie as he brought him back to bowl out the final overs, and crash, bang, wallop, stumps akimbo, Dyson was bowled for 13, followed soon after by Debo, smartly stumped for a duck. Phani and Aman were now looking for quick runs and rattled up 17 in no time before Aman gave Rosie a return catch. Rahul was last in, and with the mantra 'bat out the innings' being the hot topic of advice, he duly had an almighty swish 2nd ball and the innings was prematurely over for 189, Rosie having picked up 4 for 10 in 2 overs, and Phani left high and dry on 14. It was hard to tell how good a score this was, but the home side must have been happy to have utilised the pitch to good effect, and to have put the brakes on what had threatened to be a big total.
Predictably, Rahul opened the bowling with a no-ball, so any snick behind was irrelevant. The openers also got away with a suicidal run as Sree was unable to gather a half volley at his ankles with Reid not even in the photo. A steady start thanks to extras, was brought to a halt by Gill getting thumped on the pad in front of the stumps, with even the non-striker agreeing with the umpires decision, and Debo picking up the wicket. Stuart Coetzer then gave a demonstration of classy shots as he middled the ball with consummate ease. Hamish was soon brought on to stem the runs and delivered a wicket maiden to bowl the dangerous Reid. This brought Rayner to the crease and he was quite happy to block out time whilst Coetzer looked well capable of winning the game. Swapnil was on at the other end, and other than being cracked for 4, and the only 6 of the match in one over by Coetzer, he was giving nothing away. He then teased a mistake out of Rayner who lobbed an easy return catch, trudging back for a patient 4. Phani replaced Hamish and started with a wide, but then found the perfect spot to get through the defences of Coetzer and castle his stumps for an entertaining 36. Kevin Davies doesn't play many defensive shots, and when he was bowled by Swapnil for 5, it then put a lot of pressure on Edwards to rescue Stoneywood from a position of 81 for 5 in the 26th over. Incoming batsman Shepherd had a go and dealt almost exclusively in 2's until he was confidently caught by Dyson in the outfield for 17 off Mitch. Edwards had put Gordonians to the sword at Countesswells last season, but he just could not get going and was bowled by Arora for 13. As the innings was fading, Aman Khan came on and predictably took a wicket first ball of each of his 2 overs to wrap up a Gordonians win, as the home side were dismissed for 131.
The low bounce of the pitch made this a difficult encounter, and some of the pedestrian batting in the Gordonians middle order turned out to be vital in posting a winning total.
