Arbroath United v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sun 22 Jul 2018 at 12.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report Breakfast at McDonalds at Forfar allowed the ASI Gordonians players to stock up on calories for 3 Counties Cup finals day at Perth. The forecast suggested it would be a bit of a scorcher and it duly was. Arbroath certainly won the prize for the best warm up, whilst Gordonians just about got to the 'loose' stage.
Winning the toss and batting, and having conserved their energy, Abrar and Aman gave Gordonians a quick start. The 2nd ball from Ryan Cameron was smacked for 4 by Abrar, and Arora followed up with a further 2 boundaries in the over. A boundary apiece off the next over kept up the momentum, and a further 3 boundaries off Burnett in over number 4, plus another 2 boundaries off the 5th over, saw Gordonians race to 56 without loss. The introduction of the Arbroath Pro didn't stem the flow as Abrar hit him for a maximum, 14 coming off his first over, and the total now 90 off only 8 overs. Whilst Arora had been peppering the boundary early in his innings, he started rotating the strike as Abrar clearly had his eye in. Ross had come on and dampened the run rate, but Abrar tonked him for 6 to take the score to 99 off 9 overs. Abrar hit the Pro for another 6, but 2 balls later he snicked behind, out for 80 off only 41 deliveries, the partnership 122. With 8.2 overs to go and 9 wickets in hand, the contest looked over. Himanshu didn't get going and was out for 7, and the returning Ross was on a hat trick as he removed Imran and Arora, the latter out for 45. Mayank survived the hat trick ball but went for a duck in the next over, immediately followed by Swapnil as another hat trick ball greeted Arya. That was negotiated, but wickets continued to topple and Gordonians were all out off the last ball for 161.
This had looked like a 200 plus score up until the fall of the first wicket, but accumulation had gone out the window as the desire to hit big transfixed the Gordonians batsmen. 10 wickets had fallen in 8.3 overs for the addition of only 39 runs, and Arbroath must have been delighted they were still in the game.
We have always got on well with Arbroath, but they were unexpectedly pushing the boundaries on the banter/sledging front, and with so many youngsters involved, this wasn't a typical SPCU attitude.
Arbroath needed a good start but they didn't get it as Saraswat removed Jack Plomer in the first over. Bryce Carnegie can be extremely destructive, and went 4, 2, 4 off the next Saraswat over, but was bowled with the last ball of the over for 16. An expletive directed at a player was heard by the umpires as Carnegie left the pitch, and this gave them some disciplinary paperwork to complete. Perera was brought on to bowl and the runs dried up. Arora then came on to bowl and had the Pro caught behind with his first ball to reduce Arbroath to 47 for 3 and prompt some well merited celebrations.
Cameron and Sinclair couldn't get the ball to the boundary, and when Sinclair was well caught by Perera off Rane, the score had stuttered to 70 for 4 after 11 overs. Robb wasn't going down without a fight and walloped Arya for 3 fours in a row. Gordonians have always used their bowlers well in T20 matches, mixing things up and doing the unexpected, and an over from Abrar carried on this tradition. His 2nd over started well, but Robb lined him up for a 4 and a 6 to halt that particular experiment. Arora brought himself back and his first ball saw the end of Salmond. A no ball was conceded off the next over from Rane for the keeper taking the ball in front of the stumps, but the free hit went unpunished. 27 needed off the last over and Saraswat returned to prevent any chance of Robb producing the required miracle, although Robb did finish unbeaten on 39 as Arbroath totalled 141.
Some Arbroath players didn't seem keen on the usual friendly handshakes at the end of the match, but that did rather sum up their somewhat vocal and combative approach to the game, a mood change that is being noticed in SPCU circles.
ASI Gordonians advanced to the final to meet Meigle.
