Himanshu started out with a maiden as Haydn Evans played himself in, but Bhalani wasn't for hanging around at the other end as he trapped Majid Rasheed lbw 3rd ball. One big danger gone for zero. Evans played out another maiden from Himanshu but Bhalani was at it again as he got Lawson to snick behind to Sree for 4 in the 4th over. It took Evans 17 balls to get off the mark, and after a further 10 dot balls he started to get his shots in to play including a sumptuous cover drive all along the ground for 4. Ejaz was mixing watchful defence with good shots and thickish edges for 4's, but it was Evans who was next to go as Bhalani spreadeagled his stumps for 15.
Pro McFarlane looked solid in defence and the way he was timing the ball looked ominous for Gordonians. The score had moved to 74 when Perera was brought in to the attack, and Ejaz picked out Bhandari first ball, making up for a rare drop earlier in the innings. Braid looks after his wicket and is well capable of rotating the strike, but it was a bonus for Gordonians when Perera swung one that clipped his off stump in the same over. Arora took a wicket to make it 84 for 6 and that brought Zahid Rasheed to the crease. He isn't nicknamed Zorro for nothing, and it didn't take long for his swashbuckling style to change the game. Perera was the first to be hit clean over the boundary, his next over being his last as McFarlane took 10 off it. Carnage then ensued as Mauzzam was tanked for 15 off one over, and Swapnil for 22. A couple of balls sailed over the fence and remain hidden in foliage in gardens over the road. The partnership advanced to 119 in the 39th over before McFarlane was caught off Mauzzam for 50 from 82 balls. 2 overs later and Zahid gave Bhandari a comfortable catch, but not before he had inflicted severe discomfort on the Gordonians attack. 76 off 53 balls with 5 fours and 5 sixes. Milne and Lindsay batted out the overs to take the score to 233 all out from the final delivery of the 45 overs.
Gordonians dropped a few catches but these were forgotten about as the scoreboard ticked over at an alarming rate.
The pitch had played relatively well and the view was that if Gordonians could bat the overs then they were likely to win. Devadas had an early scare as Lawson misjudged a mistimed shot that looped just out of his grasp. He looked in form but an aerial drive was well held by Ejaz as he went for 13. Himanshu became a 2nd wicket for Majid, lbw to a ball that swung in, gone for only 5. Rane and Arora took the score to 102 in good time, Arora in particular playing some glorious shots. Now on 19, Rane smashed the ball straight back to the newly introduced McFarlane and the partnership of 66 concluded. Mauzzam looked to be struggling to get his feet and arms moving to the right places, but when he smacked McFarlane over long off for a maximum he looked more in control of his game. 4 boundaries followed but he could do little when the pitch got involved, the ball barely getting above ankle high as it scuttled in to his pads, out for 28. He had helped take the score to 162, with his partner Arora cruising on 86. Ahead of the required rate, Bhandari kept the foot on the gas with a quick 15, although getting stumped off Milne wasn't what his team needed, especially with Arora on 99. Arora brought up his ton off 113 balls with 18 fours, the majority of which were accompanied by that cracking thud generated by the middle of a bat. Gordonians cruising, at least until the next ball, when Arora inexplicably went aerial and Lawty took the catch. 6 wickets down and 35 required off 41 balls. The score on 218 and Wig was run out for 7, then next ball Milne had Imran pouched by Lawson as he tried to help the ball down leg. 8 down and 16 needed from 25 balls. Dalgarno was hastily recovered from square leg umpiring duties as Gordonians stared down the barrel of self inflicted defeat. A single off the next over from the Pro and it was 15 needed from 18 balls. Milne, with a wicket in each of his last 3 overs, steamed in from the river end, and the pads of Bhalani sent the ball for 4. A short ball was crunched for 4 to leg, and then Bhalani guided one delicately to the 3rd man boundary, finishing the match in style with a crashing square cut.
A 469 run thriller isn't the norm for Dalnacraig, but it took the first century of the season in the SPCU NE Championship by an amateur to counter the onslaught from Zahid Rasheed, and to get ASI Gordonians off the bottom of the table.
