Stoneywood Dyce v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 22 Apr 2017 at 11.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report A hastily arranged friendly turned out to be a very useful exercise, providing both teams with time on a grass wicket. A couple of Friday call offs reduced the Gordonians side to a strong 9 and it was agreed that they would bat first. Left arm quickie Koster opened the bowling for Stoneywood Dyce and gave the Gordos batsmen an early morning wake up call. His one loose ball was carved through gully by Debo, but his next 3 overs were maidens. At the other end Kidd offered up a first ball boundary to Debo but otherwise his opening 2 overs were tight. Having got their eye in Debo and Aman then took 15 off the next 2 Kidd overs before the home side brought on the change bowlers. Hood was metronomically accurate at one end, but Debo hit South African spinner Liam Lindsay for a rare 6 before playing on to a ball that kept a little low, out for a useful 17. Swapnil was next in and also cracked Lindsay for 6 but his watchful and patient knock was brought to an end as he was bowled by Hood for 14. Lindsay was replaced by Jordan Squire who was joined by Shaun Coetzer as spin was on show from both ends. Arora had looked untroubled but was caught unawares by a near waist high full toss from Squire, and his lofted shot sailed in to the hands of Coetzer rather than over the rope, gone for 23. Whilst Himanshu was watchful at one end, Hamza was quickly in to his shots, being particularly savage on Squire until another full toss didn't quite find the middle and was pouched by Hood on the boundary as Hamza was out for a frustratingly quickfire 22. Abrar in at 6 got his feet moving, but a huge stride forward didn't full umpire Redhead as a Coetzer delivery middled his pads and the finger went up. Guest Shoaib hit a nice boundary but Squire picked up a caught and bowled to send him back to the sidelines. Mayank joined Himanshu and they looked like they were going to bat out the overs but a lavish drive at a Kidd delivery was snicked behind and Mayank was out for 16, having hit 3 excellent boundaries. Himanshu had played a concentrated and restrained innings, and it was surprise when he was bowled by the returning Koster for 22. This brought the innings to a premature end with the 8 wickets having fallen in the 35th over and the score on 134.
A plentiful and excellent tea which included a choice of soups, didn't include the pizzas as they didn't make it in to the oven due to the swift end of the Gordonian innings. A lesson as to why you should always bat out the overs!
Himanshu opened the bowling and settled in to a beautiful line and length, not something to make your batting look good if you had just got back on a late flight from Thailand like Coetzer. Hamza also opened the bowling but was replaced early by Arora who had Coetzer caught behind for 6. MacLaren didn't last long as he was bowled by Himanshu who completed his first 6 overs at a cost of only 4 runs. Mitchell joined Lindsay and they steadied the innings, Lindsay waiting for the bad ball and putting it away with ease. Gordonians then opted for spin at both ends and a rare mistake from Lindsay saw him caught behind off Swapnil for 41, the total on 66. Young Davidson demonstrated an excellent defence and the score had crept up to 93 when Mitchell didn't stay in line and was bowled by Abrar for 25. Reid only lasted 2 balls of the same over and this brought in a patient Rayner. Runs were hard to come by until 8 wides went in to the scorebook off an Arora over, and it was looking like the home side might struggle to get over the line until Rayner forced the pace, hitting a couple of boundaries off Praful before driving a juggling catch to Abrar. The stage was set for Squire to wrap things up and he duly punched a boundary to win with 9 balls to spare, Davidson, who hit a few nice boundaries, unbeaten on 25.
Both sides will take positives out of the game and it will be an interesting encounter when they lock horns in the league.
