Stoneywood Dyce v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 2nd XI on Sun 25 Aug 1991 at 13.30
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report After bacon rolls at Seafield the short trip was made to Mannofield as huge underdogs to face Stoneywood Dyce in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final. Only Doney had been a regular in the 1st XI but otherwise the opportunity to bring in 'ringers' was resisted, and no regular players were left on the sidelines. Captain Pettitt won the toss and it was no surprise that he put the oppostion in to bat, but it was a surprise that he had exact tactics for the opening bowlers. The tactics worked as prolific openers McRae and Keay were less than fluent and struggled to get the scoreboard moving. Keith Scott wasn't known for his gazelle like qualities in the field, in fact few in the team were, but he was at his fielding peak to have Keay run out for 15. Donald Milne had been bowling fairly quick all season but had been prone to spells of drifting down leg side. Today was perhaps the day when he flagged up his genuine first team potential as he bowled a remarkably miserly spell. The slow start from McRae and Keay had put a bit of pressure on the middle order and wickets fell steadily without Gordonians ever really taking charge of the match. Malcolm Pirie made 33 and Ian Leask at number 9 began carving the ball over and through the slip area for boundaries, threatening to take the score above respectability. A ball short of a length from Doney was creamed above gully by Leask, and Gray stuck up his left hand to find the ball lodged firmly, much to the surprise of all concerned, and for some, this may have been the moment when a shock result went from the imaginary to the plausible. Carrara finished off the innings and Stoneywood Dyce were all out in the final over for 138, a decent score back in 1991.
The Gordonians openers Roy Angus and Keith Scott dug in to see off the new ball, but Leask and Lamb offered few loose deliveries and the scoreboard barely even ticked over. The question was whether anyone else could do better once they were out. Young Neil Robertson had all the shots but the big score eluded him on the day, but it was Bruce Doney, on his way to the man of the match award who turned the tide in favour of Gordonians. Carting a big six in to the car park, the mountainous task suddenly seemed possible again. When Doney was out for 42, runs were still required and time was running out. Cameos from Carrara, Bews and Laing helped, but few had much faith in finishing the job if quick runs were required from Pettitt and Milne if they had to bat. The brief partnership between Lowden and Gray rotated singles with comfort as the Stoneywood Dyce field left gaps that were easily pierced. Gray had worked out that he was going to hit the winning run if they kept pinching singles, but Lowden was having none of it as he took the glory with a boundary.
Pizza was delivered to Seafield but it was after all, a school night, with few confident of enough of the Gordonian chances to book a day off for any hangover recovery. A few pints were quaffed, but this was not the messy session that the win probably deserved.
