Arbroath v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2015 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Won by 29 runs

Match report Gordonians players are not stupid, and it is obvious to them that if you specify a meeting time at Seafield, that if everyone appeared at that time, unless we employ a parking attendant, it would be sheer traffic chaos. Hence everyone appeared fashionably late, and in the case of Rohit, fashionably late and fashionably dressed. He is the master of how to wear shorts, which he justifies on the basis of any sighting of the sun. Given the recent weather, cynics would suggest that he maybe doesn't own any trousers!
The road to the Arbroath tea showed signs of heavy rain. On arrival, the outfield was greasy, but the covers were on, and play was only delayed by 15 minutes. Having lost narrowly in a run fest at Forthill the previous weekend, the Gordonian openers, having been invited to bat, were expecting a similar track with a quick outfield. They didn't get it! The ball wasn't coming on and the damp outfield was assisting the fielding side. Hurst opened with a maiden to Sree, and he continued to bowl tightly, getting through his 9 overs for 25, but with nothing in the wickets column. At the other end, Christie was less economical, his 4 overs going for 22 before he was taken off in favour of the even more stingy Fleming. It was Fleming who got the breakthrough, Sree being caught for 20 in the 12th over, with only 1 boundary. Aman Arora also fell to Fleming, pinned lbw for 28, with 6 3's and no boundaries. 56 for 2 became 60 for 3 as Hamish played a lame shot to cover, out for a duck, not the expected follow up to unbeaten innings of 59 and 126. Sunny and Swapnil steadied the ship, before Sunny was lbw to Ben Plomer, whose bowling action suggests he might need shoulder surgery before he ends his teenage years, generating a remarkable amount of pace off a couple steps. This brought Mayank in, and he can see singles that others can't, and Swapnil was duly run out for 18. 95 for 5 didn't look too clever, but Mayank and Debo put on 53 in rapid time, before Debo feel to another run out for 13. After an early tea due to a rain break, Mayank may have wanted to see if a 2nd helping was available, as he got himself stumped for 46. This was a fluent and chanceless knock with glorious shots mixed in with prods in to gaps for singles. Chris Forbes had evidently loosened his shoulders with a morning round of golf and smacked 26 in 15 minutes as the other Arbroath bowlers couldn't match the accuracy of Hurst and Fleming. Gordonians totalled 197 for 9 off their 45 overs, not exactly out of sight of Arbroath, but certainly on the horizon waving.
Cam and Chris opened the bowling and a collection of dot balls filled the scorebook. Plomer and Plomer opened, with the other Plomer due in at 4. Ben drove a catch to Hamish at cover, gone for 5, and this brought Riddler to the crease. Having scored 67 the previous week, he was obviously a bit of a batman and no joker. He looked to be well played in when Chris had him lbw. Cam and Chris bowled out their 9 overs, Cam conceding only 25, and this would have been exceptional but for a loose over that got caned for 10. Chris didn't concede any boundaries as he took 2 for 18. Hamish went for 12 off his first 2 overs, but recovered well to bowl the remaining 7 for only 17. Rohit had the dangerous Ryan Plomer caught for 13, bringing Edwards to the crease and the business end of the match took shape. Jack Plomer had begun to score freely and pushed past 50 whilst Edwards offered solid but scratchy support. They had left themselves a bit of a mountain to climb as they ticked the scoreboard over, but were only ever 2 big overs away from parity. They had put on 76, when, having been fooled by 2 below par throws from Aman Khan, Edwards had barely left his crease to turn for a 2nd run, when Aman pinged it in, leaving him stranded and out for 27. Hurst joined Plomer but their urgency wasn't producing any boundaries, and when Jack Plomer offered a simple catch to Mayank off Sunny, it was effectively game over, although his 72 had kept the game alive. Swapnil and Sunny were both expensive, but cleaned up the tail taking 6 wickets between them in 4 and a half overs as Arbroath were all out for 168. Room for improvement as a few catches hit the deck, but the depth and consistency of batting will make Gordos a challenge for the rest. Hard to split Mayank and Chris if you are looking for a man of the match, but this was a team effort with everybody contributing.
