Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI v Huntly on Sat 25 Apr 2015 at 13.00
Match was Abandoned

Match report A freezing cold Countesswells greeted Huntly for the first league game of the season. They just made it in time to take the toss and did Gordonians a favour by electing to bowl. Overseas Amateur Matt Day opened the bowling and gave Sree a bit of width with the ball predictably flashing over the head of gully on the way to the boundary. The lack of a warm up by Huntly immediately prompted a lot of leg rubbing for Day as it looked like he had stretched a hamstring. The 3rd ball was short as well and was cracked behind square on the leg for another boundary. With Sree taking 10 off the first over, it looked like a long day of fetching the ball for Huntly. The wily Nicol opened at the other end conceding 6. A break for hail halted progress and Nicol then surprised Sree with a full toss which was well struck to extra cover, who hadn't succumbed to the cold yet, and held on to give Huntly an early boost, gone for 14. Arora mistimed a Nicol delivery to the youngster at mid on and with ball hitting the deck, early predictions were made that Aman would get the head down and produce a big score. Next over he was lbw to Day and 24 for 2 didn't look too clever but after 3 defensive shots, Hamish creamed a half volley off his legs for 4. Reddy at the other end was getting his eye in and playing some safe and solid shots. Having taken the score to 56 it was a bit of a surprise when Reddy went lbw for 15 to Nicol but at least the shine was well and truly off the wet ball. Nicol took 2 for 29 from his spell and was replaced by Morrison, who seemed to struggle with the conditions. Swapnil whacked a full toss for 6 and looked set for a big innings until he stopped a shot off Jardine and offered up a simple caught and bowled. Mayank joined Hamish and they made batting look easy, Hamish playing really well as he recorded his maiden 50. They had out on 70 in 30 overs when Ferguson badly damaged his knee and an early tea was taken to see if the outfield would recover from the hail showers. The pitch was handling it well, but the longer grass on the outfield was retaining the melted hail.
The prolonged breaks had put Gordonians in a position where they were having to think about a declaration to beat the cut off time to start the second innings, but this became immaterial as the post-tea inspection showed no change in the ground conditions, but at least Hamish and Mayank, on 59 and 22 respectively, had got some quality batting time under their belts.
Highlight of the day for some was the control and fluency of batting from Hamish, for others it was the hot vegetarian samosas and apple pastries provided by Mrs Gray!
It is hoped Liam Ferguson makes a quick recovery, although I'm sure it would be helpful if he had an off day when we travel to Huntly!
