Perth Doocot v Gordonians Cricket Club Gordonians 1st XI on Sat 31 May 2014 at 13.00
Gordonians Cricket Club Lost by 33 runs

Match report Once upon a time (Saturday), in a land far far away (Perth), any hopes Gordonians had of a fairy tale shot at the SPCU NE Championship, became a Snow Whites (balls) chance in hell of happening. It all started so well, winning the toss, although Aman Khan looked distinctly Sleepy as he misjudged fielding a ball near the boundary and crumpled over it, with the ball, looking temporarily as though he might need a Doc, as his team-mates looked rather Grumpy. Ferguson looked in ominous form and was particularly Happy when he dragged a ball back from Rahul on to his stumps, only for the bails to stick where they were. Ferguson certainly wasn't Bashful when it came to dealing with anything loose as he rattled the scoreboard along, and the score was on 37 in the 10th over when Wimberley nicked Rahul behind to the evergreen Lowden. An inspired change in the field saw Aman Khan moved a few yards in the covers, and Ferguson must have felt somewhat Dopey as he then creamed a ball straight to him, gone for 24. The arrival of Perth Pro Saeed to the crease brought the introduction of Pettitt and his first delivery must have looked nice and Sneezy to Saeed, who played way too early, and drove it to the outstretched arms of Mitch, who couldn't hold on. Saeed hit the next ball for 3 and then, as last season, struggled to get the ball off the square. Craig had more joy with Amateur Dale, as he edged it to Lowden, out for only 8. It really was no surprise when Saeed edged Craig to Swapnil at slip who did some gymnastics before getting the ball under control. The brakes were now firmly on as Swapnil opened with 2 maidens and then pulled off a stunning return catch to dismiss Tramontanas for 2. With the score at 65 for 5 in the 23rd over, and all the known danger men back in the pavilion, the game was there for the taking. Wigley played a few nice shots in to the wide open spaces on leg and Mearns struggled as they took the score on to 90 off 31 overs. This was probably where the wheels well and truly came off as 4 overthrows were gifted to Wigley when no run was being taken. After that it was a case of hit and run as the remaining Perth players took advantage of a fielding lapse of biblical proportions as Gordonians found it difficult to stop the ball, almost impossible to pick it up, and even harder to get it back to the stumps on the numerous occasions when the Perth batsmen looked 2nd favourites taking chancy runs. Just when the ICC were querying whether any match fixing was in evidence, it got worse, and Mearns scrambled his way to more singles than your average user of the tinder app. Mearns was undefeated on 38 as Perth totalled 156 for 7 off 45 overs. At tea Hamish gave the fielding performance 2 out of 10, perhaps a bit harsh, 3 out of 10 perhaps more apt.
This total was about 30 more than Gordonians should have been chasing, but when Debo lasered the first delivery, a generous short ball, through point for 4, the world looked good again. In the 4th over, Arora middled it off his legs and must have been surprised when Wigley got airborne to take a stunning one handed catch. Runs continued to tick over, although Debo had a number of spells of adding dots to the score book. Having seen off the opening bowlers, another set of wheels came off. Saeed and Patterson are seasoned campaigners, Patterson outfoxing Mitch to bowl him for 12. Phani thumped his 2nd ball from Patterson to the leg side boundary, and then got a big chunk of middle on to a Saeed delivery next over, which unfortunately was adjudged to have hit pad first, and his displaying of the bat to the umpire should probably have had him on report. Mayank was then ruthlessly stumped off Patterson. He was soon followed to the pavilion by Debo for 23, who, having survived a raucous appeal for caught behind, totally lost concentration and tried to hit the cover off everything, inevitably spooning up an easy catch, 52 for 5, and well in the mire. Swapnil is the man in form and made it look easy, taking the score to 70, before Hamish repeated his dismissal from the previous match at Huntly, smacking a return catch back to Saeed, out for 3. Rahul lasted 4 balls before going lbw for a duck, and he was soon followed by Lowden who got a genuine edge to slip to give Saeed his 4th wicket. Meanwhile Swapnil still looked like he had it under control, and he found a willing partner in Aman Khan who looked equally untroubled. They had advanced the score to 113, including a beautifully timed 6 from Swapnil, when disaster struck, as he was run out at the non strikers end by the sprawled bowler Dale in a flurry of arms and legs, the umpire deciding the bat was in the air, whilst Swapnil protested that his feet were in the crease anyway. We don't have reviews in the SPCU, so Swapnil trudged back for an otherwise faultless 44 with the score on 113 in the 37th over. If this had been a T20 match and we had a few wickets in hand, then this would have seemed a cakewalk, but having added 10 in 8 balls, Aman was left not out on a well made 21, Craig lbw, outsmarted by Patterson. All out for 123 after 38 overs and yet again, the failure to bat the overs fundamental to the defeat.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, have you seen those 2 sets of wheels that fell off?
